I really love Thanksgiving. Might be my favorite holiday of the year. There are lots of reasons this might be the case... The fact that I love Fall evenings, that I find the food comforting or that I've always found so much to be thankful for. This year will be no different. Of course, over the last many years, I get asked frequently about what might be the perfect wine pairing for these traditional meals. [ 642 more words ]

Well you knew it was coming. This guy can't possibly pass up an opportunity to rave about Oregon wine and, in particular, Oregon Pinot. But, in keeping with the theme of the first two posts, this is about great Fall values. So I have selected a half dozen or so of what I consider to be some of the best Oregon Pinot values this Fall. Thank you for the feed back on part 1, my post on Fall Whites. One thing almost all of you asked about were the prices. I don't usually post price because they can vary from area to area. That said, I will tell you that all of the wines covered in that post, as well as the ones here, can be had as real bargains. [ 524 more words ]

So after my last blog, I decided that I might want to spend a blog or two writing wine reviews and recommendations. Of course, you can’t really do that properly without having to actually drink (I mean TASTE) the wines first. Thank goodness I’m a trained professional! It only took a brief moment of looking out the window at the amazing palette of color that is Fall in the Willamette Valley to decide to talk about wines for Fall. [ 663 more words ]

I know. My part of the journey is done. But when you spend 25 hours in planes and airports getting home... well you have some time to think and reflect on the trip. Having already shared most of my impressions of the destinations, I find myself wanting to share a few thoughts on my takeaways. 1. Not everyone is a good tourist. [ 1,205 more word ]

Well my part of this journey is coming to and end. As I write this, I am sitting in the Airport in Rome, sipping on a cappuccino and waiting for the boarding announcement. This flight will take me back to the USA. Quick first hop, nearly 14 hours of uninterrupted airplane bliss. I’m trying to recall. Is alcohol still free on international flights? [ 603 more words ]

Is it even possible to come to Italy and not drink wine? I'm sure that for some, there are other vices to indulge. Amazing cheeses. Coffee as art. Oh, and actual art... you know, Michelangelo, da Vinci and those guys. But when your blog post is called "Winos on the loose"... I mean, come on, what do you expect. Kathy and I have done remarkably well at not succumbing to every opportunity to drink wine as this journey has progressed. [ 910 more words ]

First, let me say that's is been a couple days since we checked in and I apologize. Travel time. Spent a very full last day in Vienna then up at 4am for a morning flight to Milan. Since my last post on wine we have managed to visit Budapest as well as Vienna. Tried quite a few wines in Hungary. The locals are quick to tell you that Hungary is a well kept wine secret. At the risk of angering the nice folk we met there, maybe it should stay that way. In particular, I was looking forward to tasting through a handful of white wines from a region called Balaton. For those of you that aren't aware, one of the themes of this trip is that we are visiting the homelands of our family. We began with Portugal, the historic homeland of our mom's side. Ok, I know this is a travel log but It’s called “Winos on the Loose” for a reason. And a few of you have asked about what has been consumed so far.
