Here is our latest 5 star Airbnb review from our visitors from Sweden, who came for a visit not long after Hurricane Milton. We are also still enjoying our Superhost status, and Casa Nokomis is one of the properties in the "Guest Favorites" category on Airbnb. We are happy to be recovering quickly from the hurricane conditions in the garden.

"Despite the hurricanes that ruined a lot in the surroundings, Nancy had cleared up the garden in good condition so we could eat our meals outdoors. The house is like a complete home. Incredible equipment high quality on all kitchen decor. Nancy is responsive and very generous person. We really recommend it's accommodation."

Post-Milton update: Aloha friends, here is our latest good news update. Casa Nokomis, which is 100 years old this year, was unaffected by both hurricane Helene and Milton, and we are so grateful. We had no storm surge on our block at all. We lost a few fence panels and plants were damaged, but that was about it. Internet and cell service is restored, power is working and stable, and our weather couldn’t be better.

Nearly all of the lovely plants in local affected areas have taken a hard hit, and although many look more brown instead of green right now, they will recover. Nokomis beach has reopened, as has Siesta Key Beach. Downtown Venice is open and thriving, and most of our restaurants and shops are back in business and ready for season. Selby Gardens’ Spanish Point has reopened as well, as has Oscar Scherer State Park.

We will be taking reservations for Casa Nokomis exclusively through Airbnb for this season, so if you would like to visit, and we hope you do, we will be opening up our 2025 season dates starting November 1. I will write a post here with a link to the property on that day.

To add to the list of restaurants and other places open after Milton and Helene, Snook Haven was back open as of October 15, 2024. Don't miss this Old Florida gem when you are in the area for great food, live music, and what life's like on the Myakka River. It's just a 15 minute drive from Casa Nokomis, too.

Snook Haven is a delicious slice of old Florida, taking you back to the days before high-rises, interstates and round-abouts.

Milton and Helene update: though our beaches have taken a hit, Nokomis beach is open now, and we are still open for business here, with lots to do. Restaurants open include Nokomos Sunset Hut, Pop’s Sunset Grill, Pinchers, Capt Eddie’s Seafood, Cafe Evergreen, and all the downtown Venice merchants are also open for business. Easy access to grocery shopping with two Publix markets within 2 miles, a huge TJ Maxx Home Goods a mile away, great thrift shopping too. BirdBay Plaza is one mile away and has some of the best restaurants in the county. Come and help support us so our neighbors can rebuild. Your FL state and county tourist taxes will be used to replenish beaches, parks and more. We love our snowbirds and anyone else who wishes to share our slice of paradise. Just do a search for Casa Nokomis on Airbnb and book a stay!

Casa Nokomis survived Helene with no damage whatsoever besides some downed plant debris. We had no storm surge on our street and no standing water at all. While other areas did not fare so well, and our beaches have some damage and erosion, Casa Nokomis is open for business and we hope to see you soon. I send best wishes to all my friends and neighbors in areas harder hit, both in Florida and states north. This storm was a catastrophe for so many, and I am counting my blessings.

Another favorite food source of theirs, unfortunately, is the French fries fed to them by unaware but well-meaning tourists at our outdoor waterfront restaurants. Several of these adorable beggars are almost always perched on the railings at Pop’s and the Casey Key Fish House, where people find them irresistible. But please, give one a shrimp instead.

Unlike the black-crowned night heron, which is found throughout the world, the yellow-crowned night heron (pictured here) is found only in the Americas. Its common name comes from its most notable characteristic, namely the coloration of its head and beak. These birds make their nests in bushes or trees, although they will sometimes use rock ledges if vegetation is unavailable. Generally they live near shallow water such as marshes, wooded swamps, or mangroves, and can be found making flights with long, slow purposeful wing beats. While different subspecies have varying migration habits, much of their activity is dependent on their food source - primarily crustaceans. This makes southern Florida an ideal habitat for the birds all year long.

Dear Floridians, ☀️

We are going to be ok!
Here are some quick tips for those who aren’t sure how they are supposed to navigate this weekend’s unholy cold weather. 🥶

🏝 Wear real shoes. Your flip flops will have to fend for themselves for a few days. They will be okay.

🏝 Socks! Wear them. Preferably with real shoes.

🏝 Put the doors back on your Jeeps.

🏝 Consider pants. The extra fabric may feel a tad foreign at first, but you gotta power through.

🏝 Stock your fridge now. Publix will be closed. Assume a record number of employees will call in dead. They’ve never been this cold before.

🏝 You've likely never noticed it but there is a setting on your AC unit at home that makes it blow out warm air. Use it. Look for a little fire symbol or the word H E A T

🏝 There is also a similar function for the ac in your car… and turn off the seat AC feature.

🏝 Umbrella. Use an umbrella if you do venture outside. Not for rain, it will help you avoid head injuries caused by frozen iguanas falling from trees. Those suckers are heavy.

🏝 Wash your hair now. Your not going to this weekend. Perhaps pick up some dry shampoo on your way to pick up the last Publix sub of the week.

🏝 Take deep breaths, you got this. No deep breaths on Saturday though. Your lungs aren’t used to air that cold. They will collapse… best hold your breath until Monday

A wonderful new review came in today from a sweet young couple from Switzerland who stayed for nine days. Casa Nokomis still has dates available in July and August 2022, and we are accepting advance reservations through December at this time. Just drop me a line and I can reserve your stay direct!

"Nancy's accommodation is located in idyllic Nokomis, about a 5-minute drive from the beach. It's a fantastic place to stay, old Florida style. Nancy has furnished this little house, which is listed as a historic monument, GORGEOUS down to the last detail. It is an oasis where everything is just right! It also has a wonderful patio with a grill. The house is extremely clean, everything is there, what you want for an unforgettable holiday. It is a little paradise and one of the most beautiful accommodations we have ever had. Nancy is an excellent hostess. She can be reached at any time and you can tell that there is a lot of love behind this accommodation. We could have stayed there for a very long time! We can warmly recommend this accommodation. It’s an early spring, and our Clerodendrums are in full bloom. Thankfully, our two frosty nights in early February didn’t blast the blossoms.
