Join the Golden City Cruisers as they host their monthly cruise-in Saturday August 17th, from 5-8 P M at The Mill, 106 Temple Street, in Villa Rica.

A stellar three-day celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Thomas A. Dorsey Birthplace and Gospel Heritage Festival is planned this weekend to honor the legacy of the city’s most creative and prolific native musical talent.

The festival will take place June 28 – 30 starting with a unique gala jazz evening at the V-Plex, and performances at The MILL amphitheater and Mt. Prospect Baptist Church.

Today's "Artist of the Day" is Thomas A. Dorsey!

Revered as the "Father of Gospel Music," Thomas A. Dorsey pioneered the fusion of spiritual lyrics with jazz and blues melodies, laying the foundation for modern gospel music. His compositions, including the timeless classic "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," became anthems of faith and resilience during the Great Depression and continue to inspire generations of gospel musicians.

More fascinating facts about Villa Rica's own Thomas Dorsey (from the Gospel Music Association)

Although the scope Thomas A. Dorsey’s influence on gospel music runs well beyond his song writing, he is best known as the writer of the classic songs Take My Hand Precious Lord and Peace in the Valley. He was a versatile composer whose material shifted from energetic hard gospel to hymns. Dorsey was the founder of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses in 1932, and a pioneering force in the renowned Chicago gospel community of the 1930s, where he helped launch the careers of legends Mahalia Jackson and Sallie Martin.
