Tom Bartholomew with the The Knox County Public Library and the Black History Preservation Project of Knox County recently shared information with us about a new library exhibit in observance of Juneteenth.

Visitors to the library are invited to explore the stories of Black Hoosiers who broke ground for their community and paved a path for future generations while making contributions to Indiana with a traveling exhibit from the Indiana Historical Society (IHS).

The exhibit, “Groundbreaking Black Hoosiers,” will be open to the public until Thursday July 11, at the Knox County Public Library located at 502 N. Seventh Street, Vincennes, Indiana.

These great photos from Chelsea Polston show exactly how romantic a trip to the Memorial can be! Which explains why so many people have epic weddings there! (Not because it's an EXTREMELY reasonably priced option, which is certainly a side benefit! 😜) Thanks, Chelsea, for sending these photos. We added them to the VTB's wedding venue page!

06/07/2024

In honor of Juneteenth, the Indiana State Museum and Vincennes State Historic Sites will offer free admission on Saturday, June 15, at all 12 of its locations across the state, including the three historic sites in southwest Indiana.
Angel Mounds, New Harmony and Vincennes state historic sites will be open that day from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. as a way to celebrate the holiday, which is recognized federally on June 19 and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States following the Civil War.
Visitors can explore Indiana’s time as a territory at Vincennes, which is the state’s oldest town and also served as the territorial capital from 1800-13. During guided indoor and outdoor tours, visitors can discover original structures, including the Territorial Capitol and Old French House, and learn what life was like during the territorial period. Building tours will be offered at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. while an outdoor tour will take place at 11:15 a.m.
Tours are available first-come, first served, and advance registration is encouraged by calling the sites directly. Visitors can go to www.indianamuseum.org to find more information about Juneteenth offerings at other Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites locations across the state. It's our largest (literally) and final post of & !

The has been a cornerstone of our community for decades now and deserves so much great recognition! On what was once a battlefield now stands a memorial that commemorates the achievements of George Rogers Clark, the expansion of the United States into the Northwest Territory, the importance of the various sites and structures in Vincennes linked to Clark and his story, while also paying tribute to Father Pierre Gibault and Francis Vigo, who supported Clark against the British.
