Friday’s trip marked our 9th sighting this season of the 2nd largest animal in the world, a fin whale! Fin whales, also known as finback whales, are almost as big as, and almost as fast as our Rudee Rocket boat!

Yesterday’s sightings included these two curious humpback whales that swam all around our boat, lots of groups of bottlenose dolphins feeding underneath plunge diving northern gannets, razorbills, surf scoters, black scoters, and more!

Our data shows that about 70% of the whales that we see bear scars from human interactions. Typically these scars were caused by propeller injuries, or entanglement in fishing gear. Considering most of the whales we see are juvenile animals, this is incredibly disheartening.

While we wish we had the ability protect all of the whales from harm, one thing we can do is advocate for them. Humpback whales migrate up to 5,000 miles annually; one of the longest migrations of any mammal. If you are boating here, or anywhere up and down the East coast, please be sure to follow these guidelines to help keep the whales safe, and keep you safe as well.

It was a feeding frenzy inshore today! Thousands of northern gannets were plunge diving into the sea, gulls fighting over the fish that the gannets dropped, humpback whales feeding, and even bottlenose dolphins getting in on the action!

After making another pitstop here in Virginia Beach earlier this season, our friend Mojo has safely made it down to the breeding grounds!

Mojo has been spotted off of our coast almost every year since 2012!

Sightings so far this season have been very diverse! We have checked off a variety of both mysticetes (baleen whales) and odontocetes (toothed whales). We only have one month left of our whale watching season! 😱

EPIC DAY!!! Today we traveled a bit farther offshore to where we had been hearing lots of reports of whales, and it was INCREDIBLE!

Our research team is presenting at and attending the annual North Atlantic Whale Watch Naturalist Association meeting today. This is an incredible opportunity to network with fellow whale watch naturalists from Canada to the Caribbean and to share our findings. The more we learn about whales and their migration patterns, the more we can do to protect them.
