WE LOVE BABY DOLPHINS! Hundreds of Atlantic coastal bottlenose dolphins visit Virginia Beach each year. Many of them utilize the shallow waters at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay as their nursery grounds during the summer months. We love seeing these dolphin calves get their start right here off our coast! We would like to take a moment and congratulate some of the numerous moms we spotted this season with brand new babies! 🐬

Our team spotted another MANATEE in Rudee Inlet today! If you are boating in or near Rudee Inlet please use caution and keep an eye out. Manatees are federally protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. We tend to spot a handful of manatees here every summer!

Lots of big active groups of bottlenose dolphins lately! Our team has been spotting many familiar fins, including Tt0130 and Tt0008 which we have been photographing since 2011, Tt0054 who we have encountered since 2016, and Tt0006 who we have photographed since 2021!

All of these toys were picked up off the beach before they ended up in the ocean as litter. Thank you to the sea turtle nest patrollers for taking the time to pick up these toys and for Keeping it Beachy Clean AND for donating all of these toys to our Beach Toy Recycling Program!
Leave a Toy or Take a Toy at 7th/8th Street, 17th Street, 24th Street and 35th Street. Boxes are located on the beach close to the boardwalk.

MANATEE! We spotted this cutie at the Virginia Beach Fishing Center marina right behind the Rudee Tours fleet! Although manatee sightings are rare here, we tend to see a handful here each summer! Manatees are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. It is illegal to approach them too closely, try to feed them, or do anything that would change their behavior. If you are boating in or near Rudee Inlet this weekend please maneuver slowly and cautiously!

We are all feeling a little extra tired today after losing an hour of sleep! Let’s take a look at how dolphins and whales sleep. Dolphins and whales are voluntary breathers. Unlike us they have to think about every breath they take. In order to catch some Zzzs and still remember to surface for air, cetaceans will shut down and rest half of their brain at a time! This process, called logging, occurs for a total of about 8 hours a day in shorter bursts.
