A little squee for your feed of some otterly adorable faces!

We’ve sporadically seen these river otter pups by the dock as they’ve matured over the season. Today, one of our guests was treated to some absolutely incredible views of these cuties foraging near our fleet. Thank you, Jennifer L. for sharing these memories with us and allowing us to brighten your timelines, as well!

Note: even though these semi-aquatic mammals are captivating, they are wild and should be given an appropriate distance for viewing.

PELAGIC PREVIEW: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We checked all the things off the wish list today!

Our wildlife adventure fam was treated to views of thousands of dolphins (Atlantic spotted, Risso’s, pilot whales) and a close view of a minke whale! Loggerhead sea turtles represented our reptile sector, while scalloped hammerheads dominated our shark division. Add in a highlight of two brown bo***es, Cory’s shearwaters, purple martins, and a stilt sandpiper, and our birders also walked away happy!

heading your way… Let’s give a warm whalecome to Madison!

“Hi, my name is Madison Rowell and I am a research intern on the Rudee Flipper dolphin watching cruise this summer. I am an upcoming senior at Gettysburg College, with a major in Environmental Studies and a minor in Biology.

My research project entails observing the behavioral response of Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins to vessel traffic in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This is extremely important as vessel traffic, as well as vessels not adhering to the Marine Mammal Protection Act guidelines, can cause harm to marine life, such as negatively impacting foraging behaviors, which could potentially decrease their food intake.

As a Virginia Beach local it is extremely important to me that we protect our marine life, and ensure that the correct guidelines are followed to minimize disturbances to the dolphins’s behaviors. This research opportunity allows me to contribute directly to the conservation efforts in my community and provides me with an abundance of knowledge and experience that I can bring to my final year at Gettysburg College and future education.”

While we encourage folks to enjoy their time out on the water, we’d like to remind everyone to follow responsible wildlife watching guidelines.

We often observe vessels chasing, encircling, and running through groups of individuals. Not only is this dangerous for all parties involved, it’s considered harassment and a violation of a federal law.

One of our education interns is completing a study of the marine debris we commonly encounter in each trip. With hands-on activities for the littles, and even a “should/shouldn’t a sea turtle eat that?” diet game, our passengers will leave with a new respect for the ocean and a drive to protect the environment!

A feeding frenzy was observed offshore yesterday during our deep drop fishing trip! Over 20 fin whales and thousands of dolphins were for foraging with seabirds jumping into the action.
