A bit of rain, and a kiss of warm air, that’s what the morning offered. A sweet guest captured this image. It warms my heart when people come and truly see the beauty in our sweet little cottage in Waco. Many come and go but some come and see the homes unique elements, its imperfections and its history and love it all the same. It really is sweet to see when someone captures it for themselves…and shares with me…makes my day!

“Live in rooms full of light” Cornelius Celsius said this around 50 AD. Not that he cares, but I agree with him wholeheartedly. I’d add to his somewhat simple and profound thought this…live in rooms full of light and people who make you smile….That pretty much sums it up for me. It’s funny, a couple years ago I took a 40 day fast from social media, and it changed the way I used this account. I came back from my fast believing there were too many voices, too many people talking instead of listening. So I sort of lost my enthusiasm for sharing. A few years later I’ve sorted through my own emotions about social media and this is what I’ve come up with. I enjoy beauty and inspiration….laughter and insight…wisdom and history. So I will share a bit of each of those as I am inspired to do so. I won’t chase likes and I won’t make videos…simply joy, beauty, inspiration, wisdom all from the beauty of Central Texas where we call home and where we host hundreds of visitors each year in our cozy little cottage in Waco.

It’s here…it happens each year…and yet somehow it always surprises me. I must admit, the build up to the holidays is often as fun for me as the actual event. I absolutely love having things to look forward to…it gives me tremendous joy day in and day out to anticipate good things to come. It’s sustainable excitement and each year I love it. Over the years it’s changed…when I was a child I looked forward to the huge family gathering at my grandparents house. When we had children of our own I couldn’t wait to share Christmas with them. Now, I look forward to our adult children coming home and being together. Admittedly I am already looking forward to having a grandbaby next Christmas. I found myself wondering why I love the anticipation as much as the event and I think it’s connected to HOPE. Looking to the future with hope for a beautiful experience is a small glimpse at the hope that was born to us all those years ago in the manger, so it’s probably fitting that the Christmas season brings us a taste of how hope can sustain. Merry Christmas to you and may the season of celebration leave you feeling hopeful for good things to come.

On this first day of Hanukkah I can’t help but pay tribute to Jacob and Sarah Levinski, the people who built our cozy cottage over 100 years ago. I often find myself wondering what life was like in Waco, Texas for the young Jewish couple who immigrated from Russia and built our home. They had a business on Austin Avenue in the heart of Waco where they sold watches and jewelry. They built The Morrow House which was the first home in Sanger Heights and it is believed that they used the same architect that built the local Jewish temple in town. They are buried in the cemetery near Baylor University. So today, on this first day of Hanukkah I thank them for their legacy and the beautiful home they built that still blesses others over 100 years later.

We haven’t decorated for Christmas yet! I can hardly believe it. We have guests staying for one month! Yay, SO fun, but don’t want to disrupt their visit by getting in to the basement (yes this old historic home has a basement that used to be used for cold storage) and filling the house with Christmas. So…we wait…and probably won’t do as much decorating as we normally would since we won’t be busting out the Christmas decor until the middle of the month. Until then, I just look at pictures from the past and smile. So if you’re one of our neighbors and wondering why no garland, ribbons or wreaths yet? Don’t give up on us just yet….

I truly enjoy the different seasons of the year for many reasons. This time of year we receive many reservations for our sweet little home and most come with exciting messages. I’ve received two today, explaining the trips they’ve booked to come to and are gifts to be given. One said “we give experiences now instead of toys.” This is something our family has done for years…making experiences more important than things. It makes my heart happy to see others doing the same.

What’s a home if you don’t make memories in it? It’s a house that’s what it is…Yes, we share this home with guests from all over the world, and they create wonderful experiences, and at the same time our family and friends spend time and make wonderful memories in our little home in Waco too. Last week our daughter in law and her bridesmaids spent the weekend sharing laughs and smiles all wedding weekend long. This picture makes my heart happy, as it marks yet another wonderful moment shared in our cozy cottage in Waco.

Enjoying a cup of coffee from one of my favorite Waco spots in one of my coziest spots on this rainy Saturday morning. A few times over the last couple months I’ve blocked off weekends at the house for me, our family and our friends to come and gather…make memories…where hundreds of others have stayed and made their own. We feel blessed to own this home…we are honored to share it (yes, even when guests complain, and yes guests complain) but now we are grateful to stay and make memories of our own in it. This weekend our son is graduating from college, and we can’t wait for him, his room mates and their families to gather tonight to eat some amazing and share a few more laughs before they head their separate ways and begin their new paths. Big moments deserve to be celebrated, and celebrate we will!

It’s a busy time of year…and the hustle and bustle seems to step up a bit as the holidays draw near. I’ve given myself permission to not be perfect…I’ve decided it’s quite alright that I didn’t get all of the decorations put out and that I haven’t got a card to send out yet. Last night I even ordered a turkey and a ham from to make prepping for our gathering a little easier. Not one of these things means I’m not thrilled for the holidays. In fact, I think each of them actually frees me up to be more excited about them. Our kids will be home, I went to see the Nutcracker on Friday night, we have a big night of Christmas lights ahead of us tonight and Christmas Eve will be filled with family and fun. All of it fills my heart with JOY. I hope each of you finds things to fill your heart with joy this season! For unto us a child is born!

We bought a new couch for the living room! It’s replaced the grey one under the tv, and I love it. Ironically, I was so nervous about switching out the other one. I was emotionally attached to it even though it was showing some wear and tear and needed to be replaced. As someone who shares this precious home with guests from all over the world, I am sensitive to making it the best space possible, so when I received a private message from one of our more recent guests I took it to heart. She said she loved our home, enjoyed her stay but thought it may be an improvement to replace the couch. Ouch! I loved the old couch, but my emotional attachment needed to stop getting in the way of making the improvement! So, here she is! We also replaced the tv in the living room with a smart tv so folks can log into their own Netflix and other accounts if they don’t want to watch what’s on cable. Constantly growing and changing…that’s the name of the game!

Our little cottage is not perfect, but when you love historical homes you call those imperfections character. It’s part of her charm, and it’s what makes it special for guests who come to stay. I like to wonder what the house looked like over 100 years ago when the original owners were celebrating Hanukkah in Waco, Texas. Were they baking challah? I do know this…this pretty little cottage looks beautiful all dressed up for Christmas!

As the months click by, I enjoy making small shifts throughout our home. Gone are the days when I spend all day pulling out seasonal decor, instead I find more joy in making gentle and subtle variations on what already exists. This week I incorporated some more earth toned plates (and no, none of them match) with a splash of friend flowers I found at the tent sale. More will come in the coming days and weeks, but it will be subtle and simple. I find I get more joy out of this process, and I’m all about JOY!
