Sharing a 360 from the grounds of this glorious home we photographed in Waimea. This is the only Frank Lloyd Wright licensed home in Hawai'i, and it's available as a vacation rental!
Staying true to his principles and aesthetics, this home is a perfect getaway spot. It features a passive solar hemicycle design.
Completed in 1995, this unique home was brought to life by Sanderson Sims in partnership with Taliesin Associated Architects, John Rattenbury, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Originally envisioned for the Cornwell Family in Pennsylvania in 1954, this 3,700 sq. foot passive solar hemicycle home perfectly embodies Wright's principles of organic architecture, blending harmoniously with the natural landscape. The house features towering glass doors and windows that offer floor-to-ceiling views along its entire span. The second floor seems to float over the expansive curved main living area, suspended from beams in a hidden steel frame that circumnavigates the home.
The architectural features include rounded walls made of coral aggregate block from Oahu, Wright's signature Cherokee-red concrete floors, and a design built into a hill for sheltered indoor/outdoor living, protected from the consistent trade winds. The home is furnished with licensed reproductions of FLW-designed furniture, including Barrel chairs, Origami chairs from 1949, and Taliesin floor lamps. There is extensive built-in seating and custom-built furniture to integrate with the home's round walls. Opaque skylights bring natural light into the home, while warm lighting behind opaque glass illuminates the house at night.
