In fact, Uuku & Pua, hand raised love birds who fly freely in our gardens, may even stop by to say 'aloha'. If you’re lucky, there’ll be a bit of whale activity to watch from the lanai! (We have binoculars, but you may want to bring your own.) Many house guest have called this 'Heaven on Earth' and we are so grateful to be here on Maui No Ka Oi. We, (MauiJOY and staff) invite you to spend your time with us to relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy our sanctuary.

An undisputed holder of knowledge and link to ancient chants, hula, and traditional Hawaiian culture, ʻIolani Luahine lived a life devoted to hula kahiko.

It is said that when ʻIolani danced one could feel her connection with nature; she conveyed a mystical connection to the spiritual world. Channeling thousands of years of dancing ancestors, dancing for the gods and the gods dancing through her, she was more than just a kumu hula, more than a performer. She was a storyteller and a treasured physical embodiment of a bridge to the past.

Hawaiian name: ‘Ēkaha
Botanical name: Asplenium nidus
Family: Aspleniaceae (Spleenwort Family)
Status: Indigenous
Where found: Maui, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i, Hawai‘i, O‘ahu & Kaua‘i
Water/Light: Moist, with full to part sunlight
Elevation range: 130 to 2,500 feet
Height: Up to 4 feet, with a 4 foot spread

Notes: In old Hawai‘i, ‘ēkaha was ceremonially planted to cover stumps after a tree had been cut down for canoe making. The dark midribs of ‘ēkaha fronds are sometimes woven into lau hala mats, providing patterns and color contrasting designs. Medicinally, the leaf shoots can be mixed with other plants and used to treat infants with thrush or physical weakness. This native is also known as the ‘birds nest fern.’

Wow! Check out this dragon fly! Time to go for a hike upcountry! (After I get my foot checked...hope the break has healed enough to take some short walks at least)

With all the māmane in bloom at Hosmer Grove there are plenty of forest birds to see! However, what you might not expect is the native Pinao or Anax strenuus darting by. The Pinao is the largest dragonfly species in the United States (with a wingspan of up to 6 inches!) and a quick predator of other flying insects. Don’t blink for a chance to glimpse this species in both the Kīpahulu and Summit Districts.

Our world changes when the Whales arrive in Maui waters. There is anticipation of that first sighting and every one after that. These magnificent teachers arrive usually in December and stay here into April. They give birth, find mates and spend their winters away from Alaskan waters where they will return to feed through the summer and fall...only four months or so and they will be back...can hardly wait!
