It’s Friday the 13th, here’s a spooky whale fact for you 👻 🐋

Some Maui magic to help get you through the rest of your week! 🌞
Whales season is still a ways away, but did you know migrating whales maintain average speeds of between two and four miles per hour?
Of course, whales don't maintain a constant speed on their long journeys; they stop, backtrack, speed up, slow down, and take detours. We can’t wait until they make their long journey back to the islands!
Beautiful reef, crystal clear waters, abundant coral, and colorful fish! Spend the day with us 👉 PacWhale.com
Marty is back for another Island Rhythms Sunset Cruise tomorrow, August 16! 🎶🌅 There are only 15 spots left to secure your spot dancing on the bow to live island-style reggae music by Maui’s own Marty Dread.

Since the devastating fires, Pacific Whale Foundation has made significant strides toward helping with Maui's recovery:
-Providing displaced children with a safe space to learn
-Hosting resource and education fairs for affected families
-Creating new programs to provide long-term care for the ʻāina (land, sea and air) and its people.
With your help, we’ve begun to plant native trees and stabilize soil, monitor and restore coral reefs, work with the community to offer reef-friendly landscaping training and create support for more volunteer efforts.
Learn more about how we’ve partnered with community organizations in our short film ‘Rising from the Ashes’. This film explores organizations and individuals responding to the immediate needs of those impacted by the devastating Maui fires, and what is being done for long-term community needs and recovery today.

Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating fires that swept through Lāhainā. At Pacific Whale Foundation and PacWhale Eco-Adventures, we will be observing this day with deep respect for the events that took place and the lives that were affected by pausing all operations.
We invite the PWF & PacWhale community to join us in reflection and remembrance. Members of our staff will be participating in the Kuhinia Maui paddle out event from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM on August 8th. For those of you who will be on Maui tomorrow, we invite you to join us.
If you would like to learn more about or donate to our ongoing efforts to aid the Maui community and continue the vital programs we have developed, please click the link 👉 https://bit.ly/4fmRuWR

Nearly one year ago, on August 8, 2023, our world was turned upside down as flames took homes, schools, businesses and cherished loved ones in the Lāhainā fire.
Pacific Whale Foundation and PacWhale Eco-Adventures is grateful for the resilient community we are apart of. Thanks to your generous donations and support through our cruises, together we have made great progress towards recovery. However, there is still more work to be done. We need you more now than ever.
Today, Pacific Whale Foundation is launching the Critical Impact Fund to help us get through this unprecedented time. This unrestricted fund will support PWF's areas of most urgent need to protect the ocean, programs focused on the health of Maui's ‘aina (ocean, land and air) and people. Some of these initiatives include plans to plant native trees and stabilize soil, monitor and restore coral reefs, work with the community to offer reef-friendly landscaping training and support volunteer efforts.
Please keep Maui in your heart and consider donating ➡️ https://bit.ly/4fmRuWR

Did you know that coral reefs play a critical role in ocean health by:
🪸 Providing habitat to roughly 25% of marine species, despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor.
🪸 Providing dense algae & plankton populations as food chain building blocks
🪸 Acting as natural barriers protecting coastlines from erosion
🪸 Playing a key role in absorbing CO2, helping mitigate climate change
🪸 Participating in nutrient cycling within marine ecosystems, contributing to the recycling and circulation of essential nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, through interactions with algae, fish and other organisms.
This week is 〰️ Your trip on the ocean with PacWhale supports the nonprofit work of Pacific Whale Foundation including their reef cleanup and monitoring work. Learn more about their initiatives at PacificWhale.org!

It's Wednesday... did you pick up some milk at the grocery store? Fortunately, whales don't need to swing by the store for milk on their way home. For the female whales on the breeding ground that have just given birth, they can provide all the food a baby whale needs through whale milk. Just like other mammals (including humans), milk is vital to baby animals. Humpback whale milk is rich in nutritious protein and fats which help calves grow the muscle for strong swimming and subcutaneous fat stores to stabilize body temperature in frigid waters. Unlike its mother, a newborn humpback whale calf cannot survive on its blubber stores and must nurse for nourishment until the pair migrates to traditional feeding grounds. In Hawai‘i, mothers with calves lose approximately 70 kg (154 lbs.) per day from fasting and lactating while their calves gain approximately 25 kg (55 lbs.) per day. Wow! So, how does a baby whale get that milk? Humpback whales have two nipples on the underside of the body near the tail that protrude through the mammary slit while nursing. Calves curl their tongues around the nipple to nurse, which releases or “lets down” the thick, fatty milk into their mouths. We hope everyone gets the energy they need to get through the week, especially those amazing humpback whale mothers! 📹 Bri Simon • • • • #Humpbackwhale #humpday #humpdaywednesday #maui #mauihawaii #humpbackfact
Aloha and Happy National Spouses Day from this adorable fish couple! This particular type not only has adorable dating habits but also has the longest snout with the longest Hawaiian name to go with it...the lau-wiliwili-nukunuku-‘oi-‘oi The “nukunuku-‘oi’oi refers to the very sharp snout. And the innately descriptive Hawaiian name of “lau wiliwili” relates the similarities between the color and movements of the fish and the yellow dropping leaves of the wiliwili tree! Keep your eyes out for these adorable star-crossed lovers on the reef! • • • #nationalspousesday #pacwhale #fishfriday
