Maui Marathon
The 54th Annual Maui Marathon (Lahaina Town Memorial Run) will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2024.
For the past 30+ years, our event was held in Ka'anapali and ran through Lahaina; however, due to the wildfires on August 8, 2023, we lost the Lahaina portion of our event course. Due to ongoing issues on the west side and to avoid disrupting or inconveniencing the Lahaina community, we moved our venue for this year to the Maui Tropical Plantation. We needed to design three new race courses for the half marathon, 1OK & 5K races in that relocation. We could not acquire permits from the Maui Police Department for the 26.2 marathon and had to cancel that portion of the event. It was the right thing to do for 2024 .
Our event this year is dedicated to Lahaina and is called the Lahaina Town Memorial Run. Runners will be wearing red in honor, respect, and love for those affected by the wildfires. We hope to be back in Ka'anapali in 2025 .
The following is essential information regarding our event that will affect you on the morning of Sunday, April 21, 2024.
Event Times:
Half Marathon - Start at 5:30 AM from Pu'unene Sugar Mill and finish at the Maui Tropical Plantation
1OK Walk/Run - Start 5:45 AM from Maui Tropical Plantation, heading north towards Maalaea and back to Maui Tropical Plantation
SK Walk/Run - Start 5:55 AM from Maui Tropical Plantation, heading north towards Maalaea and back to Maui Tropical Plantation
The 10K & 5K events are estimated to be finished by 7:30 AM. The Half Marathon is estimated to be completed by 10:30 AM
IMPORTANT: ROAD CLOSURES AND TRAFFIC DELAYS
Due to the relocation of the Maui Marathon, we want to inform you of traffic control on Sunday, April 21, 2024. Significant traffic delays and stops will occur, specifically on Highway 30 between Maalaea and Wailuku, from 5:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Traffic will be controlled by the Maui Police Department, which will oversee the safety of all runners. Also, GP Roadway Solutions will cone along the entire course, providing a wider area for runners and walkers for safety.
The Maui Police Department will be stationed at North Kihei Rd & Hwy 30 and Kuihelani Hwy & Hwy 30 to control traffic so runners safely cross through those intersections.
The half-marathon runners will cross Hwy 30 just north of the King Kamehameha Golf Club entrance road. The Maui Police Department will be in full force directing traffic as they cross, which will ultimately result in delays. An MPD officer will also be stationed at the entrance of King Kamehameha Golf Course to control vehicles coming in and out.
We are making our best efforts through media to inform those who use that route to be aware of the event and consider alternate routes that morning to avoid inconvenience.
Maalaea Road will be completely closed from Highway 30 to Hauoli St. Vehicles will be able to enter from the traffic light by Carl's Junior to the parking lot for the Ocean Center, Starbucks, and the boat areas.
INFORMATION FOR CONDOMINIUMS AND VACATION RENTALS ON HAUOLI ST. (Maalaea Bay) ALONG WITH HAYCRAFT PARK.
Roughly 800 half-marathon runners will be running down to Haycraft Park and then back the length of Hauoli St. on race day. GP Roadway Solutions will have the entire road coned. The most congested time most runners will be on the road is from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM. There will be significant delays up and down Hauoli St.
We recommend residents and vacation rental residents are informed of this as they plan for that day. And allow extra time to get to the airport or scheduled activities that morning. Though Hauoli St will not be closed to traffic, the safety of runners will be most important. The Maui Police Department will be stationed at Maalaea Rd & Hauoli St, controlling traffic and runners.
Of course, the runners would welcome some cheering and positive vibes as they pass. Again, the runners will be wearing red in recognition of Lahaina.
Mahala for your patience and support on the morning of April 21, 2024!
Mahalo,
Maui Marathon (Lahaina Town Memorial Run)
