7 Interesting (& important) Facts for American Tourist to Know Before Traveling to South Africa

1. PASSPORT VALIDITY:: Be sure your Passport is valid for 6 months beyond your intended date of exit from South Africa. Your Passport should have 2 consecutive empty visa pages (not including endorsement pages).

2. VISAS: 90-day visas are issued upon entry to South Africa.

3. IMMUNIZATIONS: No shots are required for travel to Southern Africa. Malaria may be present in some of the areas you will be visiting. You should consult a travel medicine clinic to determine if malaria prophylaxis or additional immunizations are appropriate for your travel plans. You should pack a good quality insect repellant (recommended: Sawyer Family Controlled-Release Insect Repellent).

4. South Africa is covered in UNESCO stamps. There are a total of 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in South Africa - 7 Natural, 4 Cultural, 1 Mixed. (https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/za)

5. TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN: When traveling to South Africa with a child under 18, it's important to have the correct paperwork on hand. (https://www.gov.za/)

6. WORLD'S LONGEST WINE ROUTE: Route 62 in the Western Cape is world’s longest wine route! An impressive 528 miles long, and meandering past some of the oldest (dating from 1685), and most excellent wineries along the way, this is a must-visit for lovers of fine wine! You can even enjoy the winelands on a day trip from Cape Town.

7. LEAVE YOUR US DOLLARS AT HOME: The official currency of South Africa is the South African Rand. Stores do not take dollars, so if you're using cash, pick up Rands, or use your major credit cards, which are widely accepted. (the exchange rate varies, but as of September 19, 2024, the exchange rate is around Rand 17.5: USD $1 )
