A sacred white buffalo calf was born this month in Yellowstone! See the link to the article below. We'll talk more about what it means this summer.

“There are prophecies about white buffalo calves being born at a time of great change,” says one expert. How rare are white bison—and what does this birth mean?

It's January and that means people are beginning to look at summer camps for their sons. In that regard, I have some nice 8.5" x 11 Night Eagle posters similar to the ones that many of you were kind enough to hang up in your area in the past.

Because I am the only year-round staff person at camp, I’m hoping to find a few Night Eagle campers, staff, parents, and friends around New England (and the country for that matter) who would be willing to hang one or two posters in family-oriented locations where they live. Places such as schools, public libraries, natural food stores, co-ops, ski resorts, and karate centers are ideal. In fact, anywhere that boys and their parents or grandparents hang out would be perfect!

If you can help to spread the word, I'd really appreciate it! Just send me an e-mail and let me know how many posters you would like, and I'll be happy to put them in the mail to you!

Thanks and I hope to see you this summer as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary!

Add Blue Moon Smiles, Cedar Circle, and their dad, Jim, to the Work and Play list this weekend. Also, Carries the Sun will definitely be there as will William Metcalf! Come one, come all!

The weather is going to be beautiful for Work and Play this coming weekend. So far people planning to attend are: Blue Heron, Red Path teacher and a friend, Mustang Sun, Snowy Owl, Coyote Runner, Ronnie Petrikova and his mom, dad, and brother. I also am fairly confident that Sun Quest and his parents will be there too. Maybe Carries the Sun will find his way back to the area in time to drop in for the weekend. Come join us!

This year’s Fall Work and Play Weekend will be held on September 16 and 17 (weather permitting). It's a bit earlier than usual, but I will be out of town the following weekend. A rain date will be the following weekend of September 23 and 24. We invite you all to be part of the fun as we shut down camp for the winter.

This is an informal cooperative event that allows new and returning campers and their families to get to know one another while together we attack some of the many projects around camp.

Families and friends are invited to come for all or part of either day or to join us for the entire weekend. The majority of the work will take place on Saturday beginning around 9:00 a.m. (Night Eagle time).

Families that are staying can bring a tent or reserve some space for their sleeping bags in the tipi that we left up for the
weekend. We can also recommend some nearby motels or inns if you’re more inclined to a hot shower and a soft bed after a day’s work.

Depending on numbers, work projects at this year’s gathering may include clearing the water bars, making two or three bat houses, checking the Long Trail shelter at Little Rock Pond, chainsawing downed trees for firewood, burning a brush pile, building a walkway or two on the Get Lost Trail. There is always plenty to do!

What to bring? Dress for cool weather and wear appropriate shoes. You may want an emergency flashlight if you plan to stay after dark. Bring your own sleeping bags if you plan to camp. There are outdoor privies and running water at camp, but everyone should bring a personal water bottle.

Food will mainly be a communal event. Pack a picnic lunch for your family on Saturday and a dish or two to share for a potluck dinner on Saturday night. Night Eagle will contribute to supper and provide Sunday breakfast.

PLEASE LET US KNOW BY E-MAIL OR PHONE IF YOU PLAN TO JOIN US SO WE CAN MAKE THE NECESSARY PREPARATIONS.

NOTE: Because the torrential downpours caused the first lake to overflow and take out a section of the road into camp, we will be hiking in via the back trail. Please wear appropriate footwear.

Night Eagle Sweatshirts
Okay, it’s that time of year when we order Night Eagle hoody sweatshirts! Unlike larger camps, we can’t keep a year-round supply of camp shirts and sweatshirts on hand. We do, however, try to order sweatshirts (Gildan heavy blend 8 oz.) once or twice a year! This will be our spring order.

The printers have told me that the sweatshirts should be ready before camp, so you will have them in time for those chilly Vermont summer nights. If you want to order one (or more), please let me know by Thursday, June 10. The cost is $35.00 per sweatshirt, which includes shipping.

I would suggest that you have your son try on a Gildan sweatshirt in a store to make sure you know what size you want before ordering.

Sizes: Youth small, medium, large; Men's small, medium, large, X Large.

This photo is from one of the cameras around camp. It's pretty cool! My guess is there are one or two cubs that were lagging behind and did not make it into the photo. Does anyone want to make a guess as to where on the property the photo was taken?

This year’s Spring Work and Play Weekend will be held on May 6 and 7 (weather permitting). A snow/rain date will be the following weekend. We invite you all to be part of the fun as we prepare camp for the summer. Depending on numbers, work projects at this year’s gathering may include putting up a tipi or two, maintaining the water bars, checking the shelter at Little Rock Pond, cutting and splitting firewood, clearing downed limbs and trees, and generally sprucing up camp after winter. There is always plenty to do to prepare camp for the summer!

What to bring? Dress for cool weather and wear appropriate shoes. You may want a small flashlight if you plan to stay after dark. Bring your own sleeping bags and ground cloths if you plan to camp. There are outdoor privies, refrigeration, and running water at camp, but everyone should bring a personal water bottle. Food will mainly be a communal event. Pack a picnic lunch for your family on Saturday and a dish or two to share for a potluck dinner on Saturday night. Night Eagle will provide Sunday breakfast.

NOTE: If the ground is soft, plan to walk into camp from Skunk Junction. Tires will tear up the road into camp, but feet do very little damage!

Spring is just around the corner, so I will once again be at the gatehouse working hard to winterize it for year-round use. The solar system is all set to be connected to the house. That should happen in April when the road is free of ice and snow. Then, after Snowy Owl and/or Little Bear hooks up SpaceX's Starlink internet system, the computer situation will be resolved, and I should be well on the way to moving in completely!

This is the type of turtle I wrote about in the winter newsletter. The spiny softshell turtle is one of the largest freshwater turtle species in North America. Unlike most other turtles, their shell is soft, flat, and rubbery, and can be 7 to 19 inches in length. Its neck can stretch up to 1/3 the length of its shell. These are carnivorous turtles and are rather aggressive and capable of delivering painful bites.

After one of the first snows at camp in December, Leaux and I were walking walking the property and I saw what were clearly bobcat tracks. We checked the trail cameras spread around camp, but we could not find a photo of a bobcat in any of them until now. Can you guess his location?
