On this day, 80 years ago, a coalition of heroes pushed onto the beaches of Normandy, where thousands made the ultimate sacrifice - all to free others from the clutches of evil. They will forever be remembered & honored.
"Just after midnight on June 6, 1944, American and British airborne troops began landing in Normandy, France. Securing vital roads and bridges and creating confusion among the N**i defenders, they were the vanguard of the largest seaborne invasion in history. Planned over the course of a year, Operation Overlord involved more than 150,000 Allied troops landing along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified coastline with over 5,000 ships, and 13,000 aircraft in support. American forces fought ashore at Omaha and Utah beaches, while British, Canadian, and other Allies took Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches. 4,414 made the ultimate sacrifice on D-Day alone.
From the foothold established on D-Day, Allied troops pushed deeper into the countryside, opening another front to overwhelm and defeat N**i Germany. From Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower to thousands of privates charging across the perilous beaches, the Normandy invasions revealed the incredible determination, courage, and teamwork of those who fought against tyranny."
