Sept 08. After the national archives we stopped at the Old Ebbitt Grill right beside the Whitehouse for lunch. It was founded in 1876 and is the oldest saloon in Washington. As a boarding house the Ebbit guest list reads like a Who’s Who of American history. President McKinley said to have lived there during his tenure in Congress and president’s Ulysses S Grant, Andrew Johnson, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, and Warren Harding refreshed themselves at the stand around bar.

Old post office and clock tower Washington DC. Built in the 1890s. Was the General post office until 1914. Building was nearly demolished several times it is now on the national register of historic places. it was leased to the Trump organization in 2013 and it was a redeveloped into the Trump international Hotel which opened in 2016. The lease was sold in 2022 and it is now the Waldorf Astoria Washington. The clock tower is now maintained by the national park service and provides tours. The pictures were taken from the windows of the clock tower on our tour on Sept 05.

These pictures were taken as we walked around the estate. There is also a very impressive museum on site with Washington’s complete life history. The man was a farmer who became a great military leader and rose to the rank of general. throughout his life he served his country in several wars. General George Washington was in command of the army as they fought the British to gain American independence. After they won their independence he became the first president of United States. He was also instrumental in ratifying the American Constitution. After serving as president he went back to farming in Virginia and died there at the age of 67. I get the sense that without this man the America that we know today would not exist. I should also add that as he grew older he thought that slavery was wrong and should be abolished be he did not think his young country could do this yet without tearing itself apart.
