The other day I went to the US Botanical Garden at the foot of Capitol Hill.

In my opinion it is the most underrated attraction in DC. If you have the time, I highly recommend a visit.

During World War 2 a popular “meme” developed among American soldiers. Kilroy was painted, scratched, and marked onto walls, trees, and any place American soldiers had been as a friendly reminder to any coming through that they were not alone.

It was so prevalent and beloved by veterans of the war that it was engraved into the WWII memorial here in DC. Try and find it’s hidden spot next time you are in the city!

Today is the first presidential debate for the 2024 election. One of my favorite presidential debates in US history was the 1960 debate between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy.
It was the first televised presidential debate in American history and the influence of television and other visual media has impacted politics to this day.

Nixon was was a much more traditional politician and did not make many special preparations for the debate. Kennedy on the other hand utilized stage makeup among other things to highlight his already good looks. Kennedy also had special stage training and managed to remain calm even under pressure. Nixon on the other hand seemed to fidget and move much more often and began to sweat heavily under the hot stage lights.

The results afterwards were very interesting. Those who had seen the televised debate overwhelmingly said that Kennedy had won because of his calm and confident demeanor while those who had listened on the radio said that Nixon had won because his points were better laid out and articulate.

Kennedy won the 1960 election and ever since then the American public has become much more accustomed to seeing the leader of the country regularly. This has significantly shifted the way elections are run as charisma and optical messaging have become as or even more important as political promises and policy proposals.

As this election cycle progresses make sure to be informed from multiple sources and research and compare the candidates. Whoever you vote for I assure you will feel much better about your decision if you do your research and know who and what you are voting for.
