Klein Curaçao: largely uninhabited island about 15 miles off the southeast coast of Curaçao. In January 2019, I spent the day on this island snorkeling with sea turtles and soaking up all the sun.

Which was a bigger luxury than I realized at the time. The history, as many parts of the Americas, is unsavory.

The 1.2-square-mile island is the final resting place of many African slaves who were put in quarantine here for being sick during the dangerous voyage across the Atlantic. After the decline of the slave trade, Klein Curaçao traded hands numerous times, playing host to a phosphate mining operation in 1871.

Have you been to ? Alicia took her first solo trip there with the intention of tasting as much scotch whisky she could! 🥃

But whenever she wasn’t drinking her way through the country, she visited a few of the medieval castles. Stirling Castle, Inveraray Castle, and Edinburgh Castle are just three of hundreds! (at one point in its history, Scotland had over 3,000 castles!) 🏰

Alicia spent 4 months in South America, building our business and exploring as a digital nomad. This is the longest she’s ever traveled, and though it was bumpy early on, she learned some valuable lessons about the importance of balance and community. Shoutout to her fellow nomad amigos who made her solo travels less lonely. 🤗

Christmas in Curaçao | January 2019

Curaçao was my ( first legit solo travel experience. It happened to be everything I needed at the time. It was vibrant, beautiful, and I felt safe!

Because I was solo traveling, I was super conscious about how I felt at every moment. It took me about a day to realize the joy of being solo: I did not have to over concern myself with when or how I did anything because it was all about me (we all need these moments). Realizing that took me to a whole other level of relaxing. I just flowed and had THEE best time!

I’ll always highly recommend this destination to solo women travelers because it was so peaceful and easy to just relax and enjoy rather I was taking the 15 mins walk from Avila Beach Resort into town or enjoying the view from my hotel room balcony.

Feeling safe and secure is a basic and very important need.

Three ways that I manage my safety:

1. Always walk like I know where I’m going. (In Peru, I would put one Airpod in so I could listen to navigation while keeping my head up and eyes on where I was going). The best way to look like a target is to be distracted. Before I leave my accommodations or car, I make sure I’ve looked at a map of where I’m going or identified my destination by sight so that I’m not fiddling with my phone, eyes down, etc. on the street.

2. When traveling, I make sure to research the neighborhood/areas of my accommodations so that I’m in a walkable, lively area. I do not want to be secluded per my entertainment and my safety.

3. I stay connected to friends & family so that at least a couple of people know my moves.

One of our favorite cities is Asheville, North Carolina! Besides being a great foodie and beer town, did you know that Asheville hosts the annual National Gingerbread House Competition? It’s a real treat! 🍬

Have you swam with penguins?! No?…can’t relate! Alicia swam with this little pingüino (penguin en español), and saw a few more throughout her NW tour!

Fun fact: Galápagos penguins are the only species of penguins found north of the equator!! 🐧 🗺 So if you want to hang with penguins IRL, 🗣 go to the !

What👏🏾an👏🏾experience! Alicia has physically recovered from 7 days on a boat in the but may never recover emotionally from the beautiful experience of open water snorkeling! There were countless opportunities to swim with turtles, penguins, rays, sea lions, sharks (!!), marine iguanas, and all types of fish! This is exactly why she selected as her boat tour!

This video highlights one of the snorkel stops (Punta Vicente Roca near Isabela Island) which had SO MANY sea turtles! Also making appearances were manta rays, marine iguanas, penguins, and sea lions!

Alicia decided to go by sea with (that’s their boat pictured above):

* This involves booking a multi-day boat cruise, which includes on-boat accommodations and transportation to each island.

OR the other option (that has way too many steps):

By Land (and then sea)
* This involves flying to one of the islands, staying in a hotel, and booking day trips to various islands and sites
* Can be less expensive than the sea option, but requires more planning and effort
* Access to various sites is more limited than if you opt for the sea option
* Book a hotel near the harbor to ease the logistics of getting to your boat day trips OR book a hotel that offers its own boat tours

Yep, alicia is still on her tour de South America! She just touched down in Ecuador and is preparing for an 8 day boat trip to the Galápagos Islands.

We have collectively experienced almost 30 countries and we have no plans of slowing down…

We’ve both had deep moments of gratitude for the way in which we are able to live and thrive! It’s a treat and a blessing. And even in uncertain times, we step back and remember all the goodness that surrounds us. We are incredibly grateful for our lives!
