As seen in Multi-Housing News - Before and after: A joint venture of Community Three Real Estate Development and Whitaker Investment Corp., is converting a three-building former office park to Tidelock, a residential mixed-use project on the Potomac River in Alexandria Old Town North, Va., with 169 apartments and 65 condominiums, and 7,000 square feet of retail space that includes a 5,000-square-foot music school.

“Tidelock’s architect Jeremy Sharp, associate principal at Torti Gallas + Partners, said that the LEED-Silver project benefited immensely from city height and density bonuses for including affordable units and an arts space. The increased height and density allowed the developer to add five stories to each building, expanding the total square-footage from 120,000 to 270,000 square feet.”

Jonathan Johnson led the design discussion, with a brief history of kitchen design trends while Julian Goldman took the lead on technical issues with an eye towards accessibility standards. Thanks to Kristin Farr who coordinated the presentation and many throughout the firm contributed images and ideas.

In less than four years, Los Angeles’s Exposition Park will become the only site in the world to host events during three different Summer Olympics. A number of projects are on their way to be finished ahead of the 2028 games.

This week the TG+P team at Grimke set off for a walking tour of DC's Southwest Waterfront, led by firm principals Nesli Dogrusoz and Sarah Alexander. They started at TG+P's The Westerly and continued through the neighborhood, learning more about an area of DC which has been transformed twice in the last 50+ years. First with the failed Urban Renewal strategies began in the 1960s and again with recent redevelopments that helped break up those mid-century mega blocks and restitch this part of the city back into the urban fabric of DC.
