Fijian Crested Iguana
Did you know that one of the reasons the Fijian Crested Iguana on Malolo Island was nearly wiped out was because invasive predators would kill the females as they descended from the tree canopies where they live to lay their eggs in the ground?
Check out one of the captive females from the Iguana Assurance Colony who has just come up from digging her egg nest in the dirt in her cage, ready to lay her eggs. The Iguana Assurance Colony has four captive breeding pairs and 11 hatchlings in the sanctuary and are the only facility in the world captive breeding these iguanas under natural conditions – no science labs or incubators.
Thanks to their efforts over nearly 10 years with their US partners – San Diego Zoo and the US Geological Survey, they are proud to have single-handedly saved this species from extinction and now have a documented 72 breeding and tagged iguanas on the island in the wild.
