Only about 20% of the surgical need is met in sub-Saharan Africa, with 93% of the population lacking access to safe and affordable surgery.

In Kenya, the surgical workforce is stretched thin, with approximately 1 surgeon per 200,000 people, far from the global standard of 20โ€“40 surgeons per 100,000 people.

Through Elective Africaโ€™s Surgical Internship program, interns work alongside skilled local surgeons in specialities like trauma, orthopaedics, and general surgery, gaining invaluable hands-on experience and insights into this demanding medical field.

The reality of ICU care in Africa highlights the need for capacity building, better equipment access, and specialized training. In Kenya, specifically, public hospitals have only about 537 ICU beds to serve a population of over 55 million, highlighting a significant gap in critical care infrastructure.

Through rotations in these critical care units, interns gain insights into the resilience of the healthcare system. Learning to manage patient care with limited resources enhances their adaptability and critical thinking skills that are essential for any medical professional.

Reach out for the opportunity to shadow and work alongside local healthcare professionals and build skills that will set you apart in your future career.

Our Story

Elective Africa studentโ€™s placements began in 2001, in Mombasa Kenya with a visiting doctor on holiday, interested in his medical studentโ€™s getting an elective experience in a developing country. Through this, we got to place our first medical students at Coast Provincial General Hospital. This ended up becoming our first base of elective placements. We have since then placed a large number of students all across our other placement centers for them to undertake their healthcare internships.

Through this they get the opportunity to engage in activities such as working with caregivers in children's homes, teaching and education projects including immersion into the vibrant African culture.

With the experience accumulated over the last 16 years offered to over 5000 students internships abroad, our mission has been set to provide unique customized and tailor-made medical electives and healthcare internships abroad.

Overall our healthcare programs are hustle free placements in a developing country. Medical studies are guaranteed the opportunity to build their skills, gain an understanding to global health and shadow physicians in their clinical work abroad.
