In Kenya, the surgical workforce is stretched thin, with approximately 1 surgeon per 200,000 people, far from the global standard of 20–40 surgeons per 100,000 people.

Through Elective Africa’s Surgical Internship program, interns work alongside skilled local surgeons in specialities like trauma, orthopaedics, and general surgery, gaining invaluable hands-on experience and insights into this demanding medical field.

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the most common cancer among women.

Every year, over 2.3 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer globally, with 685,000 lives lost to the disease. In Africa, breast cancer is rising rapidly, with approximately 168,690 new cases recorded annually, yet access to early detection and treatment remains a challenge in many regions.

Through rotations in oncology, radiology, and general surgery departments, interns are exposed to the realities of cancer care, including the importance of breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and patient education.
