The Allen family from Tampa, Florida told me while wearing their heated jackets, that they have never experienced such cold in their lives. We visited Ford's Theater, walked around the National Monuments and Arlington National Cemetery.

I've written about this family in the past and they are truly amazing. This is the 4th Time the Johnson family from Portland, Oregon has come to Washington, D.C. In each visit, they brought a different Grandchild!!
This was Greta's turn to visit Washington, D.C. It was funny how she wanted me to compare her knowledge to her siblings!!
This trip was a 'first' in a way. On prior trips, we visited Mount Vernon, but in light of the current renovation they passed this year. Instead, we visited Ford's Theatre and The National Archives! However at Arlington National Cemetery, Greta, an amazing 11 year old when asked how she felt about Arlington, she replied, "I feel that Arlington is a celebration of the soldier's lives." I was stunned. I expect great things from her in the future!
P.S. The Johnson's are coming back next year with Grandchild 5!

I thought you might like to see this......

There’s a tunnel hidden behind Lincoln’s head on Mount Rushmore.
U.S. History

Mount Rushmore is one of the United States’ most recognizable landmarks, but it contains a hidden secret: a 70-foot-long tunnel located behind Abraham Lincoln’s head.

The tunnel was created as the entrance to a Hall of Records conceived by sculptor Gutzon Borglum. The idea was to build a chamber inside the monument that housed important documents such as the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, which would be accessible by an 800-foot granite stairway that stretched up the mountain from Borglum’s studio to the chamber.

Work began on the Hall of Records in July 1938 as crews constructed the 70-foot tunnel. However, in 1939, Congress halted work on the chamber and instructed Borglum to focus on carving the presidents’ heads instead. Borglum died two years later in 1941, effectively putting an end to the side project and leaving the Hall of Records unfinished.

Almost 60 years later, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Society brought part of Borglum’s vision to life, installing a box at the chamber’s entrance containing 16 porcelain enamel panels. The panels explain the story of the United States and include biographies of the presidents featured on Mount Rushmore. They were sealed beneath 1,200 pounds of granite capstone as an homage to Borglum’s initial vision.

Remembering our 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln on his birthday.

"It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion."

Meet the Willis family from Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. The weather people said to expect a cold icy and rainy day today, I'm so happy when they get it wrong! It was a little chilly but no rain while we explored The U.S. Capitol, walked around our National Monuments and ended our time together at Arlington National Cemetery. Tours like these are so rewarding when my guests leave with their heads happily exploding with knowledge and want more!

Excellence!

Alan was awesome! Our group was age 5 to 71 and Alan kept us all engaged. Even the locals in the group learned a lot. Really can't say enough for the tour.

Meet the extended Kenan family from Montana, Oregon and Virginia. The family was in town for the Air Force promotions of Kathryn and David! I will say the 5 year old Asher was a trooper! I know Washington, D.C. may not hold the interest of one so young, but he was amazing.
We had a great time taking a ride around the US Capitol before visiting the National Archives and looking at our founding documents before walking around our National Monuments.

Adams Family - Mountain Lake, Washington - January 21, 2025

Look no further, just book Alan!

My Wife and I had the pleasure and fortune of experiencing our first ever private tour. Alan went above and beyond our expectations and hopes of the tour, leaving an unimaginable first impression.

Alan is funny, personable, creative, and an intentional investor into the bond with you and your company. The delivery of information is entertaining throughout and easy to digest. You may also find yourself in a game of *no pressure* historical trivia as you travel around.

Look no further, book Alan!

Meet the Adams family (don't laugh!) from Mountain Lake, Washington. It was one of the coldest days in Washington, D.C. but we made the best of it. We started at the US Capitol where we walked through the Rotunda that was still set up from the Inauguration from the prior day.
I was happy to have been with them as the Capitol tour guide did nothing but lead a 'walking line". I was able to provide relevant information not only to the Adams but anyone else who wanted to listen!
There were so many parking restrictions in effect, we called an 'audible' and went to Arlington National Cemetery. After watching the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier we saw the Foreign Minister of Japan lay a wreath at the Tomb.
I hope this family comes back when it's warmer!!! What is really nice is that Shane Adams is a Sheriff in King County, Washington and gave me an official patch!

Great Personalized Private Tour of DC

We enjoyed our day with Alan touring Washington DC on a very cold day just after a snowstorm tried to shut down the city. Between the snow, President Carter’s funeral the day following our tour and the upcoming Presidential Inauguration, many venues around town were unfortunately closed.

Alan planned around the closures and took us to Ford’s Theater, the National Archives and Arlington National Cemetery. After a short late afternoon break we met up with him again for a beautiful night time tour of the National Monuments.

We enjoy eating at family owned restaurants vs. traditional chains, so for lunch, Alan suggested a wonderful Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. It hands down was the best meal we ate in our short time in DC.

We enjoyed our day and would recommend both of these tours to anyone wanting to experience the city at their own pace, while learning about the history of it all from a guide who loves to share his knowledge of US history.

Meet the Jarrell family from West Virginia. We got to see a little bit of everything! We saw the Motorcade for the President-Elect pass us as they close the streets down.

We had a great visit at Ford's Theatre where we went to the museum to see the actual .44 Caliber single shot Derringer that John Wilkes Booth used to shoot President Lincoln. In the theatre itself, we entered the space where Booth stood to look into the Presidential box!

It was off to Arlington National Cemetery next, where we saw the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We also visited the Kennedy family site and other resting places of individuals they were surprised were there!

Due to the upcoming Inauguration and a Civil Rights March, there was NO PARKING!! So we drove around the National Monuments then went to the National Cathedral. On the way, we drove down Embassy Row and around Dupont Circle.

Our day ended with me dropping them off at Martin's Tavern (The oldest family owned Tavern in Washington, D.C.) Many famous politicians and celebrities have dined their, but the Jarrell family sat in the booth where John Kennedy proposed to Jackie!

The White family near Greenville, South Carolina had a frosty day to see Washington, D.C. Our original plans were altered due to the State funeral for President Jimmy Carter. We still made our way to visit Ford's Theatre, The US Archives and Arlington National Cemetery.
We took a little break and then met up again for a Night Tour of our National Monuments. This Night Tour was like nothing I have ever done before. I could have given out ice skates due to the fact that most paths were cover with sheet ice!
It was like we were the only people walking around! We were in fact, the only people inside the Lincoln Memorial! (That has NEVER happened before)

What a start to 2025! Meet the Humphrey family from Ashtabula, Ohio. I was told that there is only one Ashtabula in the United States, and it's in Ohio.
Well it was freezing in Washington, D.C. today! Thankfully we started indoors at the US Capitol, where they are setting up for President Carter's Laying in State ceremony from Jan 7 - 9.
Then we stepped outside! The wind brought the temps to the teens, and we felt every degree as we walked around our National Monuments. (The pictures speak for themselves!) The heater in the car never felt so good!

Glassheim Family - Syosset, New York - December 27, 2024

Alan is the BEST !!!! 11/10

We truly cannot recommend Alan enough if you are looking to explore Washington DC. My fiancé and I were going to DC for a few days and wanted to pack in as much as possible. Alan FaceTimed both of us prior to our tour to build the itinerary. He helped us decide what would be worth seeing with him. He even gave us recommendations of other things we could see during our stay outside of the tour.
The tour itself was UNREAL… a day we will never forget. Alan is beyond sweet, accommodating, fun, and smart. We never met someone who knew more about history. His tour is great for any level of knowledge as he makes sure to meet you where you are at.

For his knowledge of history, you would think he has taken this tour one million times. For his excitement and enthusiasm, you would think this is the first tour he has been on. Booking Alan was the best decision we made!!!

Connors Family - Sydney, Australia - December 30, 2024

Outstanding Tour of Washington DC

We did this tour as a family of 5 including 3 young adult children. We all agreed that it was a great day. Alan is a fantastic guide, incredibly knowledgeable and personable. He has an incredible wealth of knowledge of Washington DC which he shared during the day in an informative and very engaging manner.

Alan truly brings the history of this city to life! The day ran seamlessly from pick up at Union Stn to drop off at our accommodation. Alan was flexible, making sure the itinerary worked to maximise the timings etc. throughout the day. The children all commented on not only how much they learnt during the day but how engaging Alan was.

We couldn’t possibly have done what we did in the day with Alan on our own, nor appreciated what we saw in the same way. We would highly recommend this tour.

It has been an amazing year at Concierge Tours. We've enjoyed showing off Washington, D.C. to so many guests within the United States and internationally!
We ended 2024 by taking our 7th family from Australia around our Nation's Capitol.
The Connors family from Sydney, Australia started their day as I picked them up at Union Station as they arrived from NYC! BAGS AND ALL!!
After a great visit to the US Capitol, we went to Arlington National Cemetery and saw the Changing of the Guard at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We ended the day with a walk around our National Monuments. Sound exhausting? Not for this family, as I dropped two members off at the Capital One Center so they could see the Washington Wizards play the New York Knicks! The following day, they are going to see the Washington Capitals play the Boston Bruins!

Thank you 2024 - 2025, here we come!
