We're just over four months away from opening day of the 42nd annual Kewaunee/Door County K/D Salmon Tournament! Brenda from Yacht Works Kewaunee sent us a photo of the Yeti 125 that one of our lucky competitors will win as part of one of the top prize packages. Once again there will be 50 daily port prize winners in addition to the deepest payout of any Great Lakes salmon tournament (last year 201 places, including cash to the top 151!).

Those who placed 152nd to 201st last summer will be receiving one free entry ticket for the July 12-21, 2024 contest. Details on how that will happen will be announced once tickets are available later in spring. Tickets for all others will be $30 for the entire tournament. The one-day tickets have been eliminated. All tickets double as a raffle chance for a 9.9 kicker motor from Shipyard Island Marina (https://shipyardisland.com) and K/D. One entry will be drawn from each ticket sales location, and from those, one winner will be randomly drawn at the K/D committee meeting after the event concludes.

WOW That looks like a nice walleye package!!! Not many tickets left.

ISLANDERS WIN BIG IN THE 2023 K/D SALMON TOURNAMENT 🌊🎣

Michelle and Tom Jordan, feeling an abundance of love for their son, Bradley’s good friend, Ryan, whose name is first on the Bradley Jordan Memorial plaque.

“Good things come to those who wait. For 19-year-old Islander Ryan Jorgenson, waiting for the final results of the Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament meant a cash prize of $15,000, complimentary mount of his catch from Twin Rivers Taxidermy, a custom salmon ring from Wisconsin Charm, and what mattered most to Ryan, his name on the first annual Bradley Jordan Memorial plaque.

A record setting 3,759 Kewaunee/Door (K/D) County Salmon Tournament ticket holders collectively waited an unprecedented four weeks while the tournament committee sorted out the results of the tournament. In the process, two fish were disqualified, including a 31.9-pounder.

Ryan’s 42-inch, 31.65-pound trophy salmon, caught in the waters around Rock Island, took the top spot in the tournament. For the residents of Washington Island, and many in Door County, Ryan’s situation the day he reeled in his award-winning fish is where the real story of this year’s tournament lies.”

Read more about this year’s winners in today’s issue of the Observer available for purchase in stores or online with an annual subscription at washingtonislandobserver.com.

This year's K/D Salmon Tournament payout is the largest ever, with more than $80,000 in cash and prizes. The top 10 anglers alone will share in $50,000 in cash, plus prizes!

In addition to the winners listed here, there were 50 daily port prizes distributed with a combined value in excess of $7,000.

The K/D committee is thankful for all of you who remained patient and positive during the recent review. We will be working hard to expedite 151 checks and 50 coupons good for a free entry in 2024 in the coming weeks. Those who won cash or prizes of $600 or more will need to return a 1099 form (which will be mailed) before a check can be sent.

We've got some changes in the works and are already looking forward to the 42nd annual K/D, July 12-21, 2024!

𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗞/𝗗

A record-setting 3,796 anglers fished the 41st annual K/D Salmon Tournament, including 3,759 paid entrants. The others included a large group of veterans sponsored by the K/D, as well as tickets donated to local fundraising events.

The final payout — a record of more than $75,000 in cash and prizes — won't be determined until investigations on some of the contestants are resolved.

One fish was disqualified at Monday's wrap-up meeting. A number of other fish are being looked at, and polygraphs are being scheduled for some contestants. That will give them a chance to clear up any speculation as to whether a fish was caught without breaking any of the tournament rules.

The additional time will also allow a closer look at some other entries. In past years, some anglers have come forward after the fact admitting one or more rules weren't followed. Their fish was then disqualified, but no charges were filed. The most common reason for a fish being disqualified is when not everyone on the boat has a ticket.

In order to maintain the integrity of the event, committee members often rely on tips from other anglers as well as anyone who might hear something they believe might be worth looking into. With that in mind, all tips are kept confidential. Felony charges are possible for those who intentionally break the rules in trying to win cash or prizes.

Meanwhile, fish sizes weren't quite as impressive as last summer. The top 125 in the 2022 tournament were all 25 pounds and up; this year, there were 53 larger than 25 pounds. However, the catches were far better than last summer, with many anglers reporting heavy coolers. Most of the salmon were younger fish in the 5- to 15-pound range, but there were more than 400 20-pound-plus Chinooks brought in. The final payout will go deep, possibly down to the 23-pound range.

There were some changes voted in for next year's tournament, to be held July 12-21, 2024. Among them: all ages will be eligible to participate, and the one-day ticket will be eliminated. All tickets will cost $30, and will include a chance to be drawn for prizes even if you don’t register a fish.

The committee also discussed other possible changes, such as allowing photos of a ticket on a phone to be used if the angler lost or forgot his or her copy when weighing a fish, or witnessing.

𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 𝗞/𝗗 𝗞𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗢𝗳𝗳 𝗶𝗻 𝟯𝟲 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀!

The 41st annual K/D Salmon Tournament is little more than five weeks away, and what a great start to the 2023 season! Andrew Michael took this pic of Craig Enderby after another friend helped handline the wire Dipsy leader in Monday evening off of Kewaunee. "A 3-man team effort" for what Andrew said was a 40-inch, 33-pound giant of a Chinook. Congrats guys!

Tickets are now available, in-person only. There are no online sales. You can buy for others in your party as long as you have their complete information. They will need to sign their copy stating they've read and understand the rules. Among the key rules: All fishing must be done in the Wisconsin waters off of Kewaunee or Door counties between 12:01 a.m. July 14 and the final weigh-in at noon, July 23; all anglers must have purchased a ticket ($30 for the full tournament, $20 for a one-day chance) before fishing, and all anglers age 10 and older fishing in a boat must have tickets; and, there must be a ticket-holding witness to each catch, OR if fishing solo, K/D committee-verifiable video evidence of the catch, including time and date.

Every ticket purchased is one raffle entry into a drawing for a 9.9 Yamaha motor from Shipyard Island Marina. Those who purchase tickets before July 11 are also eligible for a drawing for $100 shopping sprees at K/D ticket outlets, including Algoma BP and JP Express, Bailey's 57, B&K Bait and Tackle, Center Court BP, Greystone Castle, Howie's Tackle, Jp Express Egg Harbor, and Yacht Works Kewaunee.

I spent my Friday morning at Wings Over Wisconsin Denmark Chapter fishing ponds. Talking to the Denmarks 6th grade class about being a charter captain and how to fish for salmon on Lake Michigan. Had a great time with the future anglers.
