Heading to our region? Check out the amazing remodel of one of America’s favorite airports…then head on over to experience the Washington side!
Portland International Airport (PDX) has officially reopened its main terminal after a $2.15 billion renovation, which is anything but ordinary. The standout feature is a massive wooden roof that spans 9 acres.
The roof is made from glulam (glued-laminated timber) and other wood, all sourced within 300 miles (482 km) of the terminal. It also includes mechanical and wiring systems and features 49 skylights to enhance natural light. The roof is designed to withstand strong earthquakes.
Inside, travelers will encounter a forest-like atmosphere with over 5,000 live trees and plants by the end of construction. The expansion is happening in two phases.
The first phase is complete, and the second phase, starting August 15, will include new exit lanes, meet-and-greet areas, and more local shops and restaurants. The project is expected to finish by early 2026 and will double PDX's capacity, allowing it to welcome up to 35 million passengers annually by 2045.

It was the perfect weather for racing and remembering those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom at today’s Why Racing Events Reflection Run at the Port of Camas-Washougal Waterfront Park. Plan your next run or walk by the river here in Washougal and enjoy a sip or bite post run at one of today’s local sponsors, Ashwood Taps and Trucks.
Beautifully bordered by the Columbia and Washougal Rivers, the Washougal area is filled with many family friendly parks, hiking trails, businesses and neighborhoods. Approximately 15,560 residents call Washougal home. Incorporated in 1908, it was the site of some of the very earliest American settlers and pioneers in the Washington Territory.
Downtown Washougal’s Reflection Plaza plays host to many community events all year around. Set along Main Street in Washougal, it is close to the Washougal Town Square, Pendleton Woolen Mills Outlet Store and the Two Rivers Heritage Museum.
Thanks to creation of a pedestrian tunnel, visitors can move safely from downtown to the Columbia River for fishing at Steamboat Landing or walks down the levee trail to Capt. William Clark Park. Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge features 1,049 acres of former Columbia River floodplain with more than 200 species of birds having been recorded. The Washougal River provides year-round recreation including kayaking, fishing and swimming.
At Marina Park visitors can stroll the walking paths, picnic on a table or under a tree or on the deck overlooking the busy marina. Boaters of all types moor and launch their watercraft year round to enjoy all the Columbia River has to offer.
Captain William Clark Park at Cottonwood Beach has 85 acres of walk paths, picnic tables and covered cooking areas. The park, once known simply as “Cottonwood Beach,” commemorates the historical site where Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery camped for six days along their journey in 1806.
Washougal is fortunate to be a short 20-minute drive from the Portland International Airport (PDX) and sits at the mouth of the beautiful Columbia River Gorge.
