This morning kicks off the ceremonial start of the Iditarod in Anchorage! The course has been shortened due to the lack of snow but these mushers and amazing dogs are ready to race! “Our AAU adventure in Alaska— we did the 10-day Grand Discovery Tour — was nothing short of mind blowing! Every day we did and saw something amazing.

Our guide, played a large part in making our trip one we will never forget. Not only was he knowledgeable and professional, he did many of the extra things to ensure we had a great time.

For example, he knew how much our group wanted to see a moose, so while we were on an excursion, he went looking for one. When we finished the Denali National Park tour, he took us to see the moose — and calf — he found earlier in the day.

He brought us fresh strawberries from his garden one morning, and shared with us some delicious salmon he had smoked.

The anticipation of going on this trip and then beginning our adventure was balanced with the history of the first natives, filled with adventurous activities, eye opening excitement, good food, and relaxing nights in different lodging accommodations. All the above activities helped us gain an in-depth knowledge and a feel for the life undertaken by the explorers and pioneers who first trekked to the "Last Frontier".

Our tour guide, Rod, was one of the most important parts of the eight day trip. “We went with family on our trip to Alaska. Our tour was in a 7-passenger van. I loved having this small group for the trip. Even those that weren't family, felt like family by the end. We had Sid for our driver and guide. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and did a great job with everything! Every day was a fun, new adventure - from mountains to glaciers to train rides, plane rides, boat rides, ATV rides, hiking, kayaking, amazing wildlife and more. “We chose the best and the effort Alaska Adventures Unlimited gave us was above expectations. Our 10 day trip from Anchorage to Seward contained all modes of first class travel. Air, train, executive coach, jet boat, and horse were included while in Alaska. Connections to transportation were flawless, food was excellent, hotels were first class. Our Guide John Rodgers was knowledgeable, considerate, and fun. We were blessed with exceptional weather further making the trip outstanding. We saw 4 of 5 of the big game of Alaska in the wild multiple times. Marine viewing was spectacular. Denali was breath taking. Unforgettable trip for every one in our 14 person group. “My family and I had the trip of a lifetime on the 8 day private tour with AAU. We enjoyed and learned so much from our tour guide/ driver Dorothy and her intern Reagan who were extremely knowledgeable and very considerate of all our needs, including dietary restrictions, wine / alcohol stops when needed. 1 example of how they went out of our way was that after failure and difficulty to get me a birthday cake, Dorothy made a Baked Alaska herself for me since this was what I had wanted for my birthday cake (which is no easy feat)! Our group had children and grandparents, and for my kids Dorothy provided Alaska books, DVDs, and even jr park ranger activities for Denali. AAU's curated excursions exceeded my expectations and my highlights were Denali flightseeing, Knik glacier boat trip, Matanuska glacier hike, Alaskan railroad and even the Alaska Native Heritage Center which Dorothy lead the guide herself. I can see how if I was travelling on my own, I would have skipped this gem. We chose the premier option and I have to say that the upgrade to gold star on the railroad was worth it with the meals, 2 drinks, and amazing views. The restaurants selected/ prebooked by AAU were excellent. Accommodations generally were superior. It was so relaxing to just go on vacation and not worry about having to coordinate the best tours, accommodations, transport, food and have AAU do all the work for you. Due to weather, Dorothy et al were quick to make adjustments to our schedule to still optimize our experience. We were lucky to have a large comfortable van with some empty seats as I can see how a packed van would be tight. As a result, we were able to just enjoy our time together as a family while learning so much about Alaska due to Dorothy's immense knowledge. Overall, thank you AAU for our excellent family vacation! “My husband and I signed up as a twosome for the 10-day Grand Discovery of Alaska with Alaska Adventure Unlimited (AAU). We ended up with a group of 13 total for the excursion. It seemed AAU went out of their way to group people with similar interests and age. It was a really great group. The accommodations were perfect, ranging from "reliable" Embassy Suites with great breakfasts and happy hours to quaint, independent lodgings with comfortable rooms, scenic lakes, wildlife, etc.) Every planned activity was guided with knowledgeable, capable people so you felt comfortable and safe. The activities let you experience AK, not just "look at it". All tours provided education as well as fun, to really help you appreciate AK. Our tour guide, Rod, was a native Alaskan who could share much knowledge about every place we visited. He guided us for most of the 10 days, and was excellent at "travel-van comfort", last-minute changes, weather adjustments, handling luggage, dinner reservations, and overall "entertainment". The restaurant choices were excellent as well. Our group saw 100% of Denali Mountain, bear, moose (close up!), dall sheep, communal whale feedings (yes plural...4 total in the same excursion...AMAZING!), puffins, commonmuir, bald eagles, sea lions, otters. We walked on a glacier, jet-boated to scenic areas, horse-back rode, kayaked, ocean toured, toured through Denali Park, hiked, saw and experienced the Ididarod sled dogs, and trained to Seward and back for amazing views and wild life spottings! Many in our group fished for halibut or salmon, or took an airplane to see the glaciers from an aerial view. None was disappointed! “I really can't say enough good things about this group and the trip. Everything was well organized and all of the adventures we went on were run by excellent people who prioritized both safety and fun. From the horseback riding, to the zip lines, the ATV ride and glacier hike, and everything in between, it was truly an adventure every day. I traveled alone but that did not impact my enjoyment one bit because everyone was so friendly. I felt like they were family by the end of the trip and I will truly miss all of them. I give most of the credit for the good experience to our guide, Lyle. You could definitely tell he had been a teacher because he had us so organized, there was no way there could be any problems. ❣️💌“We had an amazing experience in the 8 day package tour of Alaska run by Alaska Adventure Unlimited. All the activities were perfectly run and were absolutely worth it. The landscape and nature was absolutely stunning and we absolutely enjoyed this family vacation with our four teenagers.

I would want to highlight the friendship we made with Sid, our guide who stayed with us during the whole time and made sure we had the best possible experience, not only driving us to the different places but making sure we had dinner reservations ready and everything absolutely planned to perfection including a few surprises along the way. This would have been maybe expected. What we did not expect was to get to really know Sid, our guide who became our friend. .We were able to get to know Alaska through his eyes and he shared his wisdom and opened up to us in an incredible way. We took turns in the car driving in the front seat so each one of us got to know Sid very well and had very meaningful conversations during the car rides and also during dinners. Our vacation would not have been the same without Sid and our kids were incredibly sad to say goodbye (a few tears were shed)
