Winter recreation is popular in Waterbury but a recent search for something beyond the ever-popular skiing, ice skating and sledding led to Little River State Park to see a niche sport that’s centuries old. This is the sport of dog sledding, otherwise known as mushing.

Day 31, end of 2020, may we never see another year like it.
There have been many highlights, with first of all our health being good. We have some great new friends in our life, as I introduced in previous posts. Our son start College at Clarkson University, our daughters Junior year at American University, and quite times around the house.
With the kennel, we are in a downsizing mode from a peak of 22 dogs. For many mushing kennel this is a small kennel, for us it is allot of dogs. So as attrition takes place, it will be a couple of steps back and one forward. When I mentions the lost of Lenny yesterday, we are looking to welcoming a Lenny Niece from this pack. We are very excited, since we all know how much joy a puppy brings, and a great way to start 2021. We wish everyone a good year to come. Happy Trails from the October Siberians

A retrospect on the year is something we all do and this pass year more dogs left us than typical. On the positive side, three of them were puppies that are in great working homes, but we also had three passing.
Lanios "Lenny" passing is one of the hardest, because he was so young, 4, and we had so much more to give each other. He was the first of three dogs we got from a kennel in Quebec with the same foundation as our kennel. He was named after my favorite musician Daniel Lanios https://daniellanois.com. We wish they could tell us when they do not feel right, so we could have figured out what was ailing him.
Sonny passing at age 14.5 we knew was coming, and he still leaves a big void. He was named for the slide guitar player Sonny Landreth https://www.sonnylandreth.com, a friend of ours and one of Sage's favorite, both person and dog. Sonny left us with 10 of his children and four grand children, so his legacy will be felt for the rest of our time with sled dogs.
JJ began the countdown this month and unfortunately passed just prior to Christmas. He spent the longest time with us - 15.5 years and the last direct tie to our original dogs. Named for the singer/ song writer JJ Cale, https://www.jjcale.com, he had that husky voice for attention. JJ had enough personality for the entire kennel.
We miss all our dear friend, but yet we have constant reminder of these past dogs, from who is with us currently. We believe their spirits will find their way back to us, or meet us on the other side. Tomorrow will be the optimism of a new year.

Day 29 and todays honoree is Dimitrios and Apollo
When I was a young professional like Dimitrios, I was attracted to the Siberian Husky and look where it led. Dimitrios may be on the same track, and help people see what it is all about is one of our goals; so they see what they are getting themselves into and know how to do it right.
Dimitrios is a native Vermonter with a passion for music and video photography. He is currently working on a Master Degree in Psychology, and getting practical experience at Howard Family Services. Some how he also finds the time to help us out twice a week. His interest in the Mushing world is a passion for him, where he is constantly seeking out more information and share his findings with us. We all are learning so much from each other through our discussions.
Apollo has been welcomed into the pack and seems to be the life of the party during playtime. He is going through the steps of introduction to the working dog life, and we hope to have him on the team soon.

Day 28, and Tatjana Birthday gets the honor of team member of the day.
Tatjana and I met 5 years ago when she came to a house concert I hosted for mushing friend from Germany https://www.wilfried-mengs.de/promo-english/. The natural connections through the dogs has foster into a great relationship. Her first love in the dog sport is agility, which she competes with her Siberian Huskies, Border Collies and her hubby. Running her dogs on the sled/rigs becomes the next priority for her dogs.
We welcome Max and Freya as participates on the team, and Tatjana been a joy on the trail running a second team. It as been fun to hear and experience her learning experiences, as she follows the number one rule of sledding -- DON'T LET GO.. We are especially grateful for Tatjana providing a wonderful retirement home for one of our dogs, Yukon, from another kennel. He hit the jackpot with other house dogs and plenty of comfy furniture.
Tatjana is another one of our expanding professional dog trainers, that help in the continued growth and knowledge of building our relationships with our dogs.
