The Blue Grosbeak (Passerina caerulea) can be observed at the Star Fort Pond area from May to the end of August. Of particular interest, a 2001 molecular genetic study places the Blue Grosbeak in the same genus as North American buntings. Blue Grosbeaks are 6 – 7.5 inches, with a thick black and silver bill, and chestnut double wing bars. Adult males are very deep blue whereas females are mostly brown. During their first summer, only the head of immature males is blue.

They tend to inhabit partially overgrown fields, brush, roadsides, and thickets. Blue Grosbeak nests are typically located in low trees or brush, usually no higher than eight feet above the ground. Nests are cup-shaped and built by the female from twigs, leaves, and bark. They are lined with fine grass, animal hair, and rootlets. It is common for Cowbirds to lay their own eggs in these nests.

Blue Grosbeaks breed in southern portions of the United States and northern Mexico. They migrate to Central America during the winter. The female will lay 3-5 pale bluish white eggs and then incubate them for about 12 days. The males will feed the females while she incubates the eggs. Both male and female feed the young for about 10 days, after which the young leave the nest. Males sing to defend their nesting territory. They make a chatter, chirp/chip sound.

A recent survey indicates that the population of Blue Grosbeaks might be increasing.
