My favorite photo from this morning at Seney National Wildlife Refuge in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan...quintessential Fall. I was happy to find a pair of sandhill cranes with a c**t along J Pool. They were gracious enough to let me observe them for some time before they decided to find another location to feed.

❤️ Originating from the Ojibwe word mishigamaa, meaning “large water” or “large lake”, Michigan was admitted into the union in 1837 as the 26th state.

With a population of about 10 million, it is the 10th most populous and the largest state by total area east of the Mississippi River.

Michigan has the nation’s longest freshwater coastline, is bounded by four of the five Great Lakes, and is the only state to consist of two peninsulas; the Lower Peninsula (proudly referred to as the “mitten” by residents) and Upper Peninsula are separated by the Straits of Mackinac.

90% of the “U.P.” is forested land and is an important tourist destination known for its accessible wilderness, unique landscapes, vast wildlife, 150 waterfalls, and the Soo Locks (where ocean-going freighters make the 21-foot leap from Lake Superior to Lake Huron).❤️

❤️ MOVING ON THROUGH….

It’s the “tail-end” of summer and the birds are showing us that it will soon be time to head South to warmer climates…
I’ve already noticed a drop in the male Hummingbirds coming to eat, as they go ahead of the females to get their new territory set up❣️
The weather has been cool and rainy so much of this summer, it almost seems like it’s JUST beginning, when it’s actually winding down…

Gitche Gumme, an Ojibwa or Chippewa word for an inland sea called Lake Superior. There’s a reason she never gives up her dead at 1000 feet deep and nearly 500 miles across from east to west.

After spending almost six hours looking for my friend, AT...I was given this gift...a momma river otter and her three pups. To make it even more special, they all climbed up on this downed tree!! At Seney National Wildlife Refuge in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

❤️ I had a great day yesterday❣️ As I was working in the yard, I heard the Pileated Woodpecker working its way through our ‘hood, with a call that can echo across several lakes as well as the jackhammer of their beak drilling into the trees for bugs❣️
I had a Hummingbird war that happened to go down right around my head, with a full speed fly-by, that missed my face by an inch and I felt the wind of it as it flew past me❣️👀❣️ Like a mini bomber❣️😁
I saved an adult snake from the yard, so it would not get mowed, then found 2 baby 6” snakes I first mistook for twisted wires, until I saw 4 eyes 👀 👀 staring up at me, down in my propane tank gauge hole…
I stuck a long stick down to the bottom of the 2’ deep hole for them to use to get out, after my attempt to get them onto a large flower cluster failed to retrieve them…
The Eagles were out, calling and soaring the shorelines for easy prey floating near the surface, while the Loons signaled with loud calls every time they were overhead❣️ A busy and noisy day in my neighborhood❣️

Excellent fishing 🎣 right off the dock, with 13 of the 15 lakes accessible to try your luck❣️

Another poser for me yesterday at Seney National Wildlife Refuge in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I noticed something was different about this stand of pines. That's because this very co-operative great blue heron was enjoying the rising sun.

Yesterday, I got to witness something incredible: Hundreds of rare orchids all blooming synchronously, for one day only, to perhaps not appear again for years.

Three Birds Orchids have nothing of value to offer the small bees that pollinate them, so instead they trick the bees into appearing they offer pollin. Since bees will quickly figure out their trickery, they all bloom on the same day so that they can all be pollinated before the bees catch on.

Three Birds Orchids are very elusive, and can appear in large numbers one year and not at all the next, so witnessing this event felt extra special.

I'm enjoying every moment I can with the loons at Seney National Wildlife Refuge in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Soon most of the females will leave...followed by the males in September. Always a bittersweet time. This is a gathering of loons just after sunrise hence the golden glow.
