DID YOU KNOW?

❌ Iowa ranks 51st in the nation (yes, that's DEAD LAST) for access to inpatient mental health services.

❌ 21,000 students in Iowa who have been identified as having a "major depressive disorder" did NOT receive any treatment in 2022. None at all.

❌ Based on Iowa's population, we should have 416 inpatient mental health beds available just for our children in this state. We have 125.

❌ Iowa has 55 pediatric psychiatrists practicing IN THE ENTIRE STATE. Those practitioners serve 14 counties. Iowa has 99 counties and a child population of over 700,000.

❌ Roughly 20% of Iowa children have a RECOGNIZED mental health issue (which doesn't count those who don't bother to seek an actual diagnosis, because they know there's no help available). That's over 140,000 children in need of care.

❌ Iowa has the 13th highest su***de rate among adolescents.

❌ In 2022, one organization serving children in mental health crises in an urban area of our state reported a waiting list of more than 550 children and pleaded for more resources to hire additional staff. They said many children had been waiting "over a year for CRISIS SUPPORT."

😡 The "big step forward" to address the crises-level of these numbers? Our legislators demanded the Su***de Prevention Hotline number be printed on the back of school IDs this year.

🚫 Additional funds for staff shortages? No.
🚫 Additional support for community hospitals who have no resources for mental health programs? Nope.
🚫 Incentives to encourage more mental health care providers to practice in rural Iowa communities? Not a chance.

If you don't think this is outrageous, you're NOT PAYING ATTENTION.

Brain health matters. And when you don't treat brain illness, it spreads. It infects people around the person suffering. And in some cases, it proves fatal.
