It was 63 years ago today in Eagle River, Wisconsin that local plumber Joe Simonton claimed he was visited by aliens who supposedly gave him extraterrestrial pancakes in exchange for drinking water. Whether or not you believe his story (Jacques Valee and Dr. J. Allen Hynek both did!), here’s to the endless possibilities of the universe!

Today’s tale takes place in Waukesha County, long before the inhabitation of the “white man” to the area.

On what is now known as Phantom Lake in Mukwonago, a love triangle took place.

Yes, long before the era of soap operas and telenovelas, love triangles occurred.

A beautiful Indian maiden was set to be wed to a suitor from her tribe, but her heart belonged to another.

I know what you’re thinking… The girl will rebuke her tribal suitor, dash for the arms of her true love only for tragedy to befall either her or her lover. It’s a paint-by-number story structure, right?

Wrong.

In this tale, the two suitors dueled to the death on a cold September night atop their canoes. While the warring admirers were preoccupied with their battle, an unseen foe had other plans.

Our young maiden, was pulled, screaming to the watery depths by the ruler of the underwater kingdom.

(That’s what you get for fighting, boys!)

In some retellings, the suitors are drowned as well.

Some say that on the night of her demise, the entire scene is played again on “Spirit Lake”. A ghostly re-enactment of the timeless tale.

Did Buzz Aldrin really see a UFO on his way to the moon?

Unfortunately no, here's his quote: "On Apollo 11 in route to the Moon, I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us. There were many explanations of what that could be, other than another spacecraft from another country or another world – it was either the rocket we had separated from, or the 4 panels that moved away when we extracted the lander from the rocket and we were nose to nose with the two spacecraft. So in the close vicinity, moving away, were 4 panels. And i feel absolutely convinced that we were looking at the sun reflected off of one of these panels. Which one? I don’t know. So technically, the definition could be ‘unidentified.’”
