The Yosemite National Park visitor access management plan and environmental assessment (EA) includes three alternatives for proactively managing visitor access to help meet long-term resource protection, visitor experience, and park operational management goals. The park’s preferred alternative is to implement a parkwide daily reservation system during peak hours. Please read about the draft plan below and consider leaving your input by commenting on the proposed.
Yosemite’s Visitor Access Management Plan and Environmental Assessment (EA) is now open for comment. We are seeking your input on this plan to improve visitors’ access to and experience in the park during its peak season. The public comment period ends September 30. This comment period is the third and final opportunity to provide input on the plan.
The plan includes three approaches, called alternatives, for proactively managing visitor access to help meet long-term resource protection, visitor experience, and park operational management goals. The park’s preferred alternative is to implement a parkwide daily reservation system during peak hours.
The plan was prepared to provide analysis and an opportunity for public comment to support informed decision-making. The draft plan and environmental assessment, as well as other plan information, are available on the NPS Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website at https://go.nps.gov/YosemiteVisitorAccess. Click “Open for Comment” to submit a response.
A virtual public meeting will be held on Thursday, August 22 at 4 pm PDT and additional public meetings will be held in gateway communities the week of September 9. National Park Service staff will be on-hand to answer questions and share information. For more information, click on “Meeting Notices” in the project website.
During the first two rounds of public engagement for this plan during the winter of 2022/2023 and summer 2023, the park received around 6,000 letters. The comments helped inform the development of management concepts, refine issue statements, strategies, and concepts under consideration.
From 2014 to 2019, the park piloted different management strategies including restricting access to East Yosemite Valley when parking lots reached capacity and actively managing parking at other popular locations. From 2020 to 2022 and again in 2024, the park piloted day-use reservation systems for the entire park. Data gathered during these periods helped inform a range of alternatives to alleviate the chronic congestion that has affected Yosemite for more than 50 years and to provide quality visitor access in the future.

Great news! $375,000 in federal funding was recently approved for the construction of a new ambulance bay in Wawona. Once complete, the new structure will allow an ambulance to be based out of Wawona and dramatically improve emergency response times in Yosemite National Park and Mariposa County. This successful effort is a result of a request for congressionally directed spending made and supported by both Senator Padilla and the late Senator Feinstein. We are excited and proud that the funding has been approved.

Yosemite National Park will partially reopen today, Sunday March 3, at noon. Visitors may enter the park via Highway 41/Wawona Road and Highway 140/El Portal Road. Expect snowy conditions throughout the park.
Big Oak Flat Road (Highway 120 from the west), Badger Pass Road and ski area, and Hetch Hetchy Road will reopen on Monday, March 4, at noon, conditions permitting. Tire chains may be required. Please call 209/372-0200 (then 1, 1) to check road conditions and status.
Wawona Campground and Camp 4 (both first-come, first-served) and Upper Pines Campground (reservation required) will reopen at noon. Be prepared for winter camping (bring a shovel!). Hodgdon Meadow Campground will reopen tomorrow at noon, conditions permitting.

😬 Yosemite Valley Parking is usually full by 10 a.m. every week day, and full by 9 a.m. on the weekends. ↘️ Here are some workaround suggestions: 🚌 Use Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System - YARTS public busses when you can. They are comfortable, climate controlled, and your Yosemite National Park entrance fee is included in your ticket fare. 🌊Visit Chilnualna Falls, lower and/or upper. The trail is in good condition, and it is refreshing being by the river under the canapés of the trees. (See video) 🏞 Visit Wapama Falls and Hetch Hetchy. 🙌 Starting July 1st, you would be able to drive on Glacier Point Road! The road will not be open 24/7 on weekdays until July 15th, so please plan ahead and go to https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm 🛴 In Yosemite Valley, the Yosemite Conservancy bike share is now open, which in many cases may help you move quicker than with car or a bus. 🚲 You can also rent a bike outside of the valley from Pedal Forward Bikes & Adventure and venture the area inside or outside the park as well. 🎏 Get a guide from Sierra Fly Fisher and go fish! 🐎 Go horseback riding with Yosemite Trails Horseback Adventures. ⚠️ Sign up for #Yosemite parking alerts by texting YNPTraffic to 333111. Once parking lots become available, you'll get a text message so you can plan your time better. Super useful tool, and we highly recommend it! 💸 Pay for your park entry pass online ahead of time at recreation.gov/sitepass/74296 and you can go drive through the park entrance kiosks in less than 20 seconds! OR 🏡 If you are staying with us, you can check-in your #YosemiteCabin, sip on your favorite drink while the BBQ sizzles, enjoy the creek or the river nearby, walk the Wawona Meadow Loop Trail, see Yosemite's History Center, the nearby historic Wawona Hotel & Restaurant, visit the Thomas Hill Studio and more, just outside your door, and leave early next day to go and chase some waterfalls.
