After install a temporary shim under the saddle on this old Gibson LG-3 to test the action/feel, the owner wanted a more permanent fix. Since I didn’t have the right length blank to make fit, I did the next best thing and grabbed a long scrap of bone I had saved ( hoarder much?), glued it to the bottom of the original saddle ( which I had previously compensated for intonation) and sanded that down to size/height. It’s not perfect, but neither is the well loved guitar, so I didn’t feel too much guilt, it worked perfectly, it will eventually age/blend in color over time, and the owner is happy. Win/win.

Wiring? Sure, we do wiring! Here’s a before and after. I do tend to leave the wires long on pickup leads in a guitar cavity… short leads may make it look neater, but they leave no options for removal/repair/replacement should the need arise. I do shrink wrap the braided part to avoid accidental shorts. But it’s all about the soldering, folks!

We do simple stuff here too. This sweet Strat got a set of Sperzel Guitar Tuners and some 11’s and a setup. A shining example of what a Stratocaster could be!

Some battles you win, some you don’t. Tried to save this dead middle pickup with some tricks I’ve learned over the years but alas it’s a goner. Luckily a whole new set was in the post and they went in without a hitch and sounded great!

But sometimes it’s easier just to replace a part. When we started to have issues w the volume slider on this Takamineguitar preamp, their excellent customer service got us a new preamp right away! Most excellent!! Huge thanks to them! Shane Theriot Music has had this guitar for almost 20 years and still loves it!

Sometimes when you’re on the road, it’s not that easy to do a replacement, so you do a repair! I forgot to get a before pic, but the edge of the nut on the 5 string broke off! Luckily there was enough of the slot intact that the string doesn’t pop out. I borrowed some ‘bicarbonate’ ( baking soda) from Chef Dave Perry Flavor Savor Llc and combined with some Loctite super glue I was able to build up the edge of the nut again. A good fix until we get home and I can replace it. Cheers!

What does one do when one needs a pink guitar for a promotion with moe. but the promised one doesn’t arrive in time? One pivots and paints! And adds a racing stripe for pizzazz, to boot! Special thanks to Steve Young for the supplies and the help and incentive!

While I’m home between tours, and as touring winds down, the bench warms up!
It was all acoustics a week or so ago, with a bunch of sweet Martins here for set ups and a really nice Epiphone, too! These guitars are or will be for sale in Hoboken and Jersey City ( unless I buy one first!): call James Mastro and tell him I sent ya!! And if you need some guitar repair work done send me a message!

Since my ‘The Guitar Tech’ page seems to have disappeared in my brief absence, ( there are apparently others, but as they say on TV, don’t be fooled by cheap imitations! Haha!), I’m restarting here. And what better way to start than with a cool old Les Paul Jr owned by my friend Steve Conte! This guitar, like its owner, just plain rocks!
Stay tuned, more stuff to come! And a new hashtag
