More great things happening in Waynesboro's backyard! We're at mile marker 0 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, so when you plan your trip to this historic landmark, be sure to stop by Waynesboro!

National Historic Landmark ✔️

On December 16, 2024, the Secretary of the Interior announced the designation of the Blue Ridge Parkway as a National Historic Landmark.

The Parkway was described in the designation as "a masterwork of landscape architecture and transportation engineering and one of the finest examples of the collaborative work of the National Park Service and Bureau of Public Roads. It also represents the movement to conserve natural and cultural resources in the eastern United States through the expansion of the National Park System in the 1920s and 1930s."

The Parkway was designated alongside 18 other historic landmarks. The over 2,600 National Historic Landmarks found in the U.S. today come in many forms: historic buildings, sites, structures, objects, and districts. Each represents an outstanding aspect of American history and culture. The Parkway is honored to receive this designation.

“As America’s storyteller, it is our privilege at the Department of the Interior, through the National Park Service, to tell our nation’s history and honor the many historical chapters and heroic communities that brought us to where we all are today,” said Secretary Haaland. “These newly designated historic landmarks join a list of the nation’s premier historic and cultural places, all of which were nominated through voluntary and locally led stewardship.”

How lucky are we to have the Blue Ridge Tunnel right in our backyard? A nearly mile-long engineering marvel from the 1850s, it's perfect for the history buff, adventurer, or outdoor enthusiast. Grab your flashlight and explore the cool (literally and figuratively, it's a constant 50 degrees) depths of the tunnel. Afterwards, swing by Virginia Metalcrafters Marketplace and grab your favorite kind of beverage at either Basic City Beer Co., Happ Coffee Roasters, or Common Wealth Crush.

Waynesboro has some of the most eclectic and niche shops in the valley for your list this holiday season.

Waynesboro extends its support to our neighbors in Southwest Virginia, Eastern Tennessee, and Western North Carolina that were impacted by hurricane Helene. We understand how much these towns mean to their communities and visitors.

If you have planned a fall trip to Waynesboro, we were fortunate enough to sustain minimal flooding and power outages, and while some attractions remain closed, like the Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel and the South River Greenway, our local businesses are open and we look forward to seeing you. ⛰️❤️
