I never get tired of this before and after shot of the dining room at Blue Jay Haven!
I was filled with so much excitement and anticipation. The kids were helpful though I can’t say excited 😜. Fast forward almost 3 years and my daughter has flipped at least one piece of furniture by herself and my son is dreaming of doing the same. This project planted seeds of something I couldn’t have imagined growing.

Have you ever wondered if the Smoky Mountains, Blue Ridge Mountains and Appalachian Mountains are the same or where does one end and the other start?
I have lived in the same town that Blue Jay Haven is in my whole life. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park are both right here! Businesses are named after ALL 3 of these mountain ranges in our area. The Blue Ridge Mountains, Appalachian Mountain and the Smoky Mountains seem to be used interchangeably.
So here’s your geography lesson: the Smoky Mountains is a colloquial reference and came into existence after the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was created. The park is a subset of the much larger Blue Ridge Mountains. The Blue Ridge Mountains are a segment of the even larger Appalachian Mountains.

Chickadee Nest had a facelift this week! My husband and I switched out this new bedroom furniture for what was there. I can’t wait for guests to see it! I’m especially excited for returning guests to be surprised by the upgrade! 😊

Swipe for before and after photos!! I still love looking back at the photos of this house when we first bought it! There is a striking contrast in the photos of the living room at Chickadee Nest.The transformation is remarkable!
Better yet, my husband, daughter and I I did a lot of the work ourselves. We bought the house in January of 2020. When the world was in experiencing insane turmoil due to onset of Covid, we stayed incredibly busy ripping out old things, sanding, caulking holes, painting, laying new flooring and more. I listened to 25 novels during all of the work to further distract my mind. Thankfully, my dad is a building contractor so he orchestrated electricians, plumbers, heating and airmen and carpenters also help out.
The compliments from guests never get old. My favorite most recent review from Taylor said, “This (house) is one of the coziest places I have ever stayed! Rebecca is not only incredibly communicative, but also detail oriented with a focus on guest’s experiences…The house is in a great location near a beautiful lake and the house itself is straight out of a fairy tale!”

I love the Smoky Mountains at sunset!!! I’m sure the sunrise is equally as beautiful…I’m just not that person during this season of my life. 🤷‍♀️
I’m always excited for our guests because I know we have so many gorgeous places for them to visit! Blue Jay Haven and Chickadee Nest are located near the most phenomenal places! Within our county, you can find the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. When I get out to hike or sightsee, I totally understand why people come here for vacations!

Nothing enlivens a space like flowers and plants.
Chickadee Nest has these plants plus 3 more inside and several outside. Of course it takes time to keep them all alive, but to me it’s worth it! I love it when we travel to vacation homes that have thriving plants. According to what guests tell me they love the plants too!

Before and after flash backs…and oh the difference we were able to make!
2 years ago we were just opening for our first guests after spending every single spare minute for 6 months remodeling the house. It was our escape in 2020 from the world shutdown that we all experienced. Mentally the hard physical work was just what we needed. I don’t think the house nor the furniture had been changed since 1980 when it was built.

We still have some availability this summer so whether you are by yourself or have 12 people you’d like to travel with, we have a place for you. We can rent out just Blue Jay Haven which accommodates 7 people or just Chickadee Nest which accommodates 2-4 people. There’s also an option to rent both the house and apartment which would accommodate 13 people. It’s the perfect way to travel and be together yet have complete privacy at anytime. The Great Smoky Mountains going on and on for days during a gorgeous sunset…perfection.
Need an idea of something to do while visiting us? Watch the sunset (or sunrise) at Waterrock K**b on the Blue Ridge Parkway only 15 miles from Blue Jay Haven. Take chairs or a blanket, a camera, snacks and drinks. Then watch the sun go down behind the sea of mountains.
Go early and climb to the highest peak on the parkway at 6273 feet summit. The 1.2 mile out-and-back trail is rated at a moderate intensity by . I promise it will be a memorable experience.

Lake Junaluska never gets old. It’s a small lake Blue Jay Haven and Chickadee Nest with a 1/3 of a mile walk to the water’s edge. There are two walking/running loops around the lake…2.3 or 3.8 miles each. Every visit reveals new surprises. Flowers, baby swans, ducks, geese, the Smoky Mountains, eagles, kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing fishing, playing in the pool, food and so much more!

We added some pizazz to the fire pit!
New chairs, lights and flowers. My brain has endless ideas of ways to make things look nicer and more enjoyable. With that my husband is always a good sport about entertaining my ideas. So we mixed concrete, added the wood posts to the planters, made sure the posts were straight then added soil and flowers. Then we put these Adirondack chairs together. He drew the line when after 9 last night we hadn’t had supper when I suggested a small fire for this photo. I conceded!

While hiking in Western North Carolina this spring be on the lookout for trilliums.

In these photos they are all in different stages of blooming. I read about them recently. When a seed drops it takes 2 years for it to germinate, and for that to happen something like a mouse has to eat the seed to break down the encasement on the seed. So when you see them, you will be witnessing a miracle in nature. Bonus: these trilliums are surrounded by money plant. A plant that when dried looks like coins! I’ve been intrigued by this plant my whole life!
We still have a few days open this spring if you’d like a place to stay while you explore the Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains.

Each walk around offers a different feast for the eyes, heart and mind.
Yesterday while walking with my friend , , she captured this shot of the Smoky Mountains behind the lake. Swans and ducks were swimming, a single gosling was being guarded by fierce parents, flowers were blooming, people were fishing and enjoying walks with their dogs or friends and so much more! I highly recommend stopping by the lake each day while visiting our area.

It’s rhododendron season here in Western North Carolina!
There are several giant rhododendrons at Blue Jay Haven and Chickadee Nest. Some are in full bloom and others are beginning to open up. Many throughout our county, on the Blue Ridge Parkway and in Great Smokies National Park are native bushes. Many are cultivated varieties. Magnificent beauty. If you’d like to book a stay to see our rhododendrons in bloom there’s still time. The blooms are always a bit later in higher elevations.
