I never get tired of this before and after shot of the dining room at Blue Jay Haven!
I was filled with so much excitement and anticipation. The kids were helpful though I can’t say excited 😜. Fast forward almost 3 years and my daughter has flipped at least one piece of furniture by herself and my son is dreaming of doing the same. This project planted seeds of something I couldn’t have imagined growing.

Have you ever wondered if the Smoky Mountains, Blue Ridge Mountains and Appalachian Mountains are the same or where does one end and the other start?
I have lived in the same town that Blue Jay Haven is in my whole life. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park are both right here! Businesses are named after ALL 3 of these mountain ranges in our area. The Blue Ridge Mountains, Appalachian Mountain and the Smoky Mountains seem to be used interchangeably.
So here’s your geography lesson: the Smoky Mountains is a colloquial reference and came into existence after the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was created. The park is a subset of the much larger Blue Ridge Mountains. The Blue Ridge Mountains are a segment of the even larger Appalachian Mountains.

Chickadee Nest had a facelift this week! My husband and I switched out this new bedroom furniture for what was there. I can’t wait for guests to see it! I’m especially excited for returning guests to be surprised by the upgrade! 😊

Swipe for before and after photos!! I still love looking back at the photos of this house when we first bought it! There is a striking contrast in the photos of the living room at Chickadee Nest.The transformation is remarkable!
Better yet, my husband, daughter and I I did a lot of the work ourselves. We bought the house in January of 2020. When the world was in experiencing insane turmoil due to onset of Covid, we stayed incredibly busy ripping out old things, sanding, caulking holes, painting, laying new flooring and more. I listened to 25 novels during all of the work to further distract my mind. Thankfully, my dad is a building contractor so he orchestrated electricians, plumbers, heating and airmen and carpenters also help out.
The compliments from guests never get old. My favorite most recent review from Taylor said, “This (house) is one of the coziest places I have ever stayed! Rebecca is not only incredibly communicative, but also detail oriented with a focus on guest’s experiences…The house is in a great location near a beautiful lake and the house itself is straight out of a fairy tale!”

I love the Smoky Mountains at sunset!!! I’m sure the sunrise is equally as beautiful…I’m just not that person during this season of my life. 🤷‍♀️
I’m always excited for our guests because I know we have so many gorgeous places for them to visit! Blue Jay Haven and Chickadee Nest are located near the most phenomenal places! Within our county, you can find the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. When I get out to hike or sightsee, I totally understand why people come here for vacations!

Nothing enlivens a space like flowers and plants.
Chickadee Nest has these plants plus 3 more inside and several outside. Of course it takes time to keep them all alive, but to me it’s worth it! I love it when we travel to vacation homes that have thriving plants. According to what guests tell me they love the plants too!

Before and after flash backs…and oh the difference we were able to make!
2 years ago we were just opening for our first guests after spending every single spare minute for 6 months remodeling the house. It was our escape in 2020 from the world shutdown that we all experienced. Mentally the hard physical work was just what we needed. I don’t think the house nor the furniture had been changed since 1980 when it was built.

The appalachaintrail passes through Max Patch. The bald is stands at 4629’ though it feels much higher, as from the top all you can see are ranges of the Smoky Mountains in every direction. . If you park in the #pisgahnationalforest parking lot, it’s less than a mile to the top. The bald was used as pasture in the 1800s. When I’m standing at the top gazing out at the sea of panoramic mountains, I like to imagine how people all throughout the generations have used the land and how they have lived. . Local tip: the creeks are all full of life here in the Smoky Mountains. There is beauty in the water tumbling over smooth rocks, in the sounds of the creek rushing along and in the abundance of wildlife that calls the creeks home. . Last Sunday my daughter and I hiked along The Big East Fork Trail in the Shining Rock Wilderness. I spent 1000s of hours as a kid looking for crawfish and salamanders near my house. And so I can’t help but look for critters even now. I look carefully, trying to not injure unseen things…and cautiously looking out for snakes!

Several guests were favorites of mine, but one couple stands out the most. 2 years ago we stayed at an Amish family’s short term rental about 8 hours away. We got to know them during our stay and this made our visit delightful. We exchanged stories about our lives. They took us on a buggy ride💕. A few months ago people rented The Chickadee Nest. When I saw the names, I couldn’t believe it! It was the same people. They had no idea who they were renting from either...a very ironic turn of events. We took them to Max Patch, a famous section of the #appalachaintrail. It was a glorious day and visit together. Lives very different yet very similar.
