Postcard Harbor Tours

Postcard Harbor Tours Postcard Harbor Tours takes you on a tour of picture-postcard Wellfleet Harbor aboard a picture-postcard gaff-rigged Catboat. Enquire for rates.

Postcard Harbor Tours consists of myself (the Captain, John Wolf, U.S.C.G.-licensed for up to 50-ton power and auxiliary sail) and my 18-foot Marshall Sanderling Catboat. The catboat is generic to New England (and especially Cape and Islands) waters, and from shortly after the Civil War was used in the inshore fishing and shellfishing industry, as well as for pleasure boating. Featuring a mast loc

ated forward in the bows and one large, gaff-rigged sail, they are as picturesque as the waters they ply, and for a century-and-a-half have been the centerpiece of innumerable postcards-hence the name! GALA VI is of fiberglass construction and is equipped with a reliable, single-cylinder Diesel auxiliary engine, ship-to-shore radio, GPS, and all Coast Guard-required safety equipment (life jackets, signaling devices, etc.). Wellfleet Harbor is widely regarded as among the most picturesque and varied in New England, with a storied history which I enjoy imparting to those who would like to know more about what they are seeing. I take day trips (usually ±3 hours), sunset trips (spectacular!) and-when appropriate-moonlight excursions. I also take trips out to Jeremy Point/Billingsgate Island for swimming, picnicking, etc. I can take up to a maximum of six persons. Trips are, of course, subject to the vagaries of the weather and tides. I typically operate between June (this year, early July) and late October or early November.

Don’t be fooled if you don’t see my banner in Epistrophy’s rigging; I took it down for the upcoming little storm arriving this weekend. As long as Epistrophy is in the water, Postcard Harbor Tours is in business! Barring a major hurricane, I expect to be operating through October.

Greetings, everyone: I know it's been a while since anyone heard from me here, so here's some news you can (hopefully) use:

POSTCARD HARBOR TOURS is "upsizing!" In early February, with mixed emotions I parted company with GALA VI, my hardy, seasoned 1970 Marshall Sanderling 18-foot catboat. She is now enjoying the somewhat warmer waters of the New Jersey coast with her new owner and his family, making new memories.

At the same time, I became the new owner of a 1981 Marshall 22 catboat, the 22-foot former BAYMAN'S ROOST. As with any older vessel, there have been some needed repairs and upgrades, including a new electrical system, upgraded plumbing, upgraded engine controls, and so on, as she metamorphoses into her new incarnation as the s/v EPISTROPHY. Due to multiple demands on my time-especially after having been elected to the Wellfleet Select Board a year ago-this process is taking longer than anticipated. I had hoped to have her in the water and on the way to Wellfleet by now, but that date will have to be pushed back a bit. I will post updates here as I figure them out, and meantime I will post some pictures as she takes shape.

Once EPISTROPHY is in her element and in her new home port, we can look forward to even more spacious and comfortable accommodations for our upcoming excursions in uniquely beautiful Wellfleet Harbor. Added bonus: due to the progress of the dredging of our harbor over the last two late fall/winter seasons, EPISTROPHY will be able to leave and enter the marina at any stage of tide, allowing me to run two or even three trips daily!

It is with regret that I must announce an early end to the 2021 charter season for Postcard Harbor Tours and s/v GALA VI. Due to the imminent start of phase 2 of the dredging of our harbor-the phase which includes the inside of the marina – I had to give up my dock space at the beginning of September and move her out to her mooring. unfortunately, after a couple of weeks, our immense flock of cormorants decided she would make a superb bathroom, and in one day they managed to cover every square inch of her, stem to stern and side to side, with a thick coating of excrement. After spending two days cleaning her up, it became evident that continuing my charter operation under these circumstances would not be practical. The payoff is that next year, I will no longer be constrained by the tides and should be able to accommodate two or even three trips per day, right through to the end of October!

To those of you who enjoyed an excursion on GALA VI during the 2021 season, my heartfelt thanks for your patronage. May the rest of 2021 and the upcoming holiday season be joyous for you, and I will look forward to seeing you next year!

Once again, at long last, GALA VI is back in her element and docked at her familiar spot at the Wellfleet marina, opposite the pearl restaurant, and POSTCARD HARBOR TOURS is once again open for business, launching our 12 year providing delightful sightseeing sails in Wellfleet’s spectacular harbor as well as beach experiences at Jeremy Point and Great Island!
