There are two types of travelers in Europe: Those who packed light and those who wish they had packed light.

Why pack light and right? That’s easy! Unless you require special equipment while traveling, by limiting yourself to one carry-on bag and one personal item, you empower yourself to nimbly navigate public transportation, to avoid wasting precious vacation time unpacking and repacking your bag, and to travel more simply—with a focus on your experiences rather than your things.

Now for the more intimidating question: How do you fit a whole trip's worth of luggage into a single suitcase? The answer is simple: Bring very little and ruthlessly prioritize by scrutinizing each item.

Don't pack for the worst-case scenario. Pack for the best-case scenario and buy yourself out of occasional jams. Some travelers pack a whole summer's supply of deodorant, thinking they can't get it in Europe. As it turns out, you can buy soap, toothpaste, face cream, and razors from Sicily and Slovakia if you run out.

Whether you're traveling for three weeks or three months, pack exactly the same. Bring clothes you can layer for various temperatures then mix and match them to create different outfits and wash them in the sink as you go. To keep your clothes tightly packed and well-organized, zip them in packing cubes or compress them into heavy-duty airless baggies.

Finally, always think in terms of what you can do without—not what will be handy on your trip. Don’t dream up hypothetical uses for every item in your house. A megaphone, a sleeping bag, and a parachute could all be helpful if you get stranded on top of the Eiffel Tower, but they will almost certainly take up space in your suitcase unused. When in doubt, leave it out.
