Hey folks, I was out at Pyramid lake today and it was gorgeous and there are very few fisherman, get out there, the fish are biting.
I am gearing up for our annual trip to Eastern Nevada for our May outings. We have a couple of cancelations if anyone is interested in joining us. The date I have a couple spots is MAY 17-19

Colorado is Amazing!

In February we did our first appearance at the Fly Fishing Show in Denver. Our company, Bucket List Fly Fishing, has always been present at the Pleasanton show in California, but now that both of our businesses are growing (on Pyramid Lake in Nevada and in Brazil) we’re looking for opportunities to cover new markets. The Fly Fishing Show in Denver was huge, even intimidating, but definitely a great pick for these goals. Our immediate results - a few trips booked for people from Colorado to Pyramid Lake, including a group from Colorado Women Flyfishers (.flyfishers ), a club that represents a trend of growing women’s fly fishing community. It was actually amazing to see how well fly fishing women are represented in Colorado. Having this cheerful crowd over at The Big Pond was an immense pleasure. And we’re definitely planning to grow our ties with this community. So, we’d like to thank The Fly Fishing Show for the opportunity, announce our confirmed presence at the next year’s show in Denver. Thank you, TFFS and thank you, Colorado, you’re Amazing!

Any day on the lake is a great day. Especially when we can share it with our good friends. The folks of the Peninsula fly fishers were blessed with some good fishing and the weather was better than expected. This is the 13th year hosting this group. They always show up with a smile and ready to catch some fish. It is always nice when we are able to put some big fish in the net as well. On the menu for this group as the snow melts off the Traeger is pulled pork carnitas which is a client favorite at the lake.
We are well into our spring Pyramid season and old man winter keeps hanging on. Even the fish are ready for some warmer weather, and it appears it is heading our way. April continues to impress with fish showing up in the shallows more and more every day. The rest of the season is going to be awesome.
We still have two weekend outings coming up this season.
April 15-16 two day shore beginner clinic/outing
June 10-11 2 ½ day float tube outing (not for beginning fly fisherman)

So, April started off the right foot! What a fantastic 3-day streak we’ve just had! Weather keeps surprising, but fishing turned out to be a very pleasant surprise! Come out to the Big Pond!

Every year we encounter anglers from all over the world. Pyramid Lake has become a destination fishery for sure. The huge Lahanton Cutthroat Trout has anglers coming to Reno in search of the World’s Largest Cutthroat Trout. These anglers we take fishing seem to always question our local flies. The flies we catch these amazing fish with really make no sense most of the time. Chartreuse Beetles??? Blood Midges??? Leaches??? Tadpoles??? None of these insects and bugs actually exist. But they always out fish the flies that anglers bring with them to fish with us. Who knows why. That being said, on a recent fishing trip to the lake with my good friend Rick Barry, Rick decided to put on one of the large Peacock Bass streamers he and I had used last January in the Amazon at our operation in the jungle. I tried to explain to Rick that our little Woolybuggers and Beetles would be a better idea but there was no stopping, Rick. About 30 minutes later as I was making lunch on my Traeger smoker, I was interrupted by screams from the lake. I looked over and Ricks rod was bent double, and the drag was screaming. 15 minutes later as we finally got this huge fish close and eventually into the net, I was shocked to see what might actually change the fishing at Pyramid Lake forever. The moral to the story is that if you don’t try something different you will never get different results and on this day Rick and I came to the conclusion that if you use flies for a specific fish you have a better chance of catching that fish. Although the common wooly worm and our crazy beetle patterns are still the way to catch trout in Pyramid Lake, The Peacock Bass Space Invader fly might just have to be added to our online store fly offerings for Pyramid Lake in the future.

There’s nothing like fishing on Pyramid Lake - from sunrise to sunset, the scenery, the Mountain View, fishing on a ladder in a salt lake in the middle of the desert and even the smallest fish of your day is the biggest trout of your life. The skill game is on, ladies and gentlemen, we’re not afraid of winter turning around and coming back! Come out in April, you won’t regret it!
