A lot of people are talking about A.I., which means Artificial Intelligence. But on Wheat Ridge Road, it means Amish Intuition. And it says, it's pie season. ;)

Red Oak, White Oak, are the most common. Shagbark Hickory, Black Walnuts, Buckeye, and American Beech are common too. Print out the pic below and take it with you to identify what you come across. Another beautiful fall day for a hike in Adams County. The hike on the Helen C. Black Cedar Falls Trail is one of our favorites. Although the waterflow over the falls is very minimal due to the dry weather and not as pictured in the below pic. The trail head is approx. 9 miles east of West Union at sr 348 and Cedar Mills Rd. At the trail head is a historic marker noting the history of the 19th century grist mill. The trail is a 3-miles to the falls and back. Cedar Falls picture courtesy of John Howard. Considering the dry weather we've had this summer and continuing thru the fall the color in the leaves is about as good as its going to get. The see the full display of fall colors and for a breath-taking view of the Brush Creek Valley, and considering is far too nice outside not to be out and about, how about a hike to Buzzardroost Rock. this weekend? Adams County's most popular hike. See the trail map below. Trailhead approx. 7-miles east of West Union off s.r. 125. Photo by Terrence Huge.

The old historic Wayside Inn in West Union (formally Bradford's Traven) still serves home cooked meals and is open Tuesday thru Friday & Sunday.

Did you know? The Olde Wayside Inn in West Union, Adams County, is a landmark with more than 200 years of history. Originally built in 1804 by Gen. David Bradford as Bradford’s Tavern, it served as a key stop along the Maysville-Zanesville stagecoach route, welcoming famous guests like Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, and even Santa Anna. Over the decades, the inn changed hands and names—known as the Crawford House, Marlatt House, and Commercial Hotel—before being beautifully restored in 1936 by Mr. and Mrs. William Lafferty. Today, the inn remains in the Lafferty family and continues to stand as a testament to the town’s rich heritage.

One of the most fascinating stories tied to the inn is that of Joe Logan, a runaway slave from North Carolina who found refuge in West Union. In the 1820s, Joe worked at the inn as a hostler and, along with his wife Jemima, operated a station on the Underground Railroad from their home on Logan’s Lane. Their bravery and defiance helped many others find freedom.

Joe Logan risked his life to escape slavery and later built a home in West Union, where he and his family helped operate a vital Underground Railroad stop. His story is a powerful reminder of the fight for freedom right here in Adams County. Visit the Olde Wayside Inn to learn more about this inspiring chapter of local history!
