For those who may be intent on visiting beautiful ocean destination...you need to know this.

For those hitting the ocean and waves this summer.
Reminder:
This is really simple. You can spot a rip current. Unfortunately, it's where it looks easiest and safest to enter the sea. This is because the rip current is looping around and pulling back OUT. Hence no waves rolling IN. NEVER ENTER THE SEA HERE. If you are already in the sea and get caught in a rip current (you'll know because you will suddenly be moved from your location and it will be impossible to swim against it) don't panic. Swim ACROSS, not against the rip current. For example, rather than trying to swim to shore while being pushed out, swim parallel to the beach and you will be able to get out. Then you can swim ashore. Please educate friends or family visiting the beaches this summer. Stay safe 🙏

A major rebuild of the campfire area at Starry Night with a tip o' the hat to Ann & Gordon Ketterer "Flat Rock" parties from our first round in VT (80's). Cooking on a flat stone is a new "built in" addition with some good eating guaranteed for friends & family!!! (Stacked stones were hand quarried across brook.)

Spring continues to claim its space as color and critters return to pond and woodland. Beaver scavenging. Ferns unfurling. Narcisus nodding in the breeze. Succulents spreading. Gardens ready for seeding. Willow retrieving. Contrails intersecting and maybe even a blessing. Warmth...patiently we've been waiting!

After abundant winter cleanup, Spring is finally settling in.

Lawn switched on the color. Geese, ducks, red winged blackbirds and a newbie Kingfisher have returned. Beaver are making waves and cutting wood. A pileated woodpecker cruised low overhead as I walked Willow. Gardens will soon be on the agenda.

Winter has yet to fully appear judging by the lawn and spring-like mud season on dirt roads, but it is sure to dawn in the near future. Meanwhile, temps have allowed Mount Snow and Stratton to use their superior snowmaking capabilities to stockpile fresh trail coverings for top to bottom skiing all over the mountains. With the turn of the New Year we have openings. Ideal for family related weekends/weeks with capacity for up to 13 people, 3 bedrooms (including one bunkroom), spacious 27' cathedral ceiling living room, 2 person whirlpool bath in master suite, beaver pond and 10 forested acres with stream to occupy guests every season. Campfire pit with wood overlooking pond. Mount Snow (3mi south) and Stratton (11mi N) are easily accessed along with a bundle of lovely lakes. Winter has arrived during this seasonal wrestling match. First plow, shovel and snowblowing sessions are on the books. Mountains have opened. Beaver Pond freeze/thaw/freeze cycles in effect. Shrub protection in place.

Starry Night is now scheduling rental guests for our Mount Snow/Stratton ski season (January through March 2024). Presently doing our final winter prep chores. Betsy & l permanently reside in our back entrance walkout basement level apartment during rental season. The Rec Room with billiard table and bar are still part of rental which provides 2400 sqft. of space to the rentals. We do not interact with guests unless requested to assure your privacy. Rates for Jan.-Mar.: $380/night all fees/taxes included. Sleeps up to 13. 2p whirlpool bath in master suite. Bunk room. Been doing a little staining/sealing now that the wood around the porch has had a chance to adjust to the elements for 13 years. 🤣 And to top that our raised bed gardens and French Baguette baking skills are coming right along too!

We’d like to let everyone know that Starry Night has come through the summer of flooding unscathed. Some in our local area as well as other sectors of VT have experienced dramatic losses. We count ourselves fortunate and seek to do our best to help others in their recovery.
One of the best things we all can do is to support area and regional family owned businesses by utilizing their services. In the greater Mount Snow and Stratton Region there are tremendous festivals scheduled (Wilmington’s Blueberry Bash for starters) with fabulous food, exciting entertainment and activities for all ages.
Of course the outdoor experience can’t be beat with lakes, streams, trails, boat rentals and so much more.
Very Green Vermont is calling. We’ll keep the lights on for you!

Weather Alert until 8pm. Severe Thunder Storms moving into area with up to 80mph winds. We battened the hatches. Took down and stowed all deck furniture. Getting very dark to west and breeze picking up. Things that can fly have been secured. Willow has done her business. TMI right? Leave nothing to chance. Seeing pics today of water surging over dams, Prohibition Pig Brewery semi destroyed in Waterbury. Big black clouds. Heading in! Getting inside!!!!

So when the ground is super-saturated and the sky is over-achieving in output, streams that serve as conduits for runoff (that by this time in normal times are barely trickling)…well, they turn into agitated cataracts along lines of least resistance. Power out and generator on in West Wardsboro. Campfire kindling will be tested. Refrigeration is intact. Willow the water dog is having the time of her life! I think I need to elevate and lengthen our stream crossing. 🤣

Soil is saturated and prolonged rainfall means flooding. Stay alert everyone and have those generators ready! We are up on the plateau in West Wardsboro so if those in area need assistance we can be a staging ground to render help. Stay tuned to changing conditions. Blessings to all.

My first attempt at mortise and tenon construction. It was time to reconstruct the disintegrating original post and log pine sign frame for the property. Wood rot happens. Pressure treated wood and good tight joinery should make a difference. Cut the 4x4” stock down to an actual 3” dimension to complement the composite plastic sign inserts. Need paint, stain or oil to complete. Pleased with outcome. Another project completed for the long haul. And another massive downpour interrupting our internet connection. Waiting to post. All things in their time.

Willow is now our Starry Night wonder dog. Full grown at 70 lbs and ever so playful. Here she pauses by campfire pit overlooking the beaver pond as another summer’s day draws to conclusion.

“So this happened in Montana. I'm on my way to go to my interview this morning when I get pulled over by a police officer.

I am native American and my friend that was with me is black. Just saying.

Both brake lights decided to go out this time.

As he walked to the car and I was pulling out my stuff, he quickly said,

"Don't worry about pulling anything out. I just want you to know that your brake lights are out."

So I'm immediately upset, because I just got them replaced like last month.

So I explained to him how Firestone wants to charge me $600 just to run a test on the wiring of the car.

He looked at me like 😨 and told me to pop the trunk.

He checked the lights in the trunk and tapped them, but they didn't come on.

So he told me to pop the hood to check the relay box then asked me to get out to check the other one.

Then worked on the wiring under the dash.

He could've easily given me a ticket, but Officer Jenkins stepped out of officer role, and into mechanic role, and human role to make sure I was straight.

By the way HE FIXED THEM."
