(Heads Up!) Woman sustains thermal burns in Yellowstone National Park. Stay on trails and boardwalks in thermal areas!

- On Monday afternoon, Sept. 16, 2024, a 60-year-old woman visiting Yellowstone from Windsor, New Hampshire, reportedly suffered second- and third-degree burns to her lower leg while walking in a thermal area near Mallard Lake Trailhead at Old Faithful.

- The woman was walking off trail with her husband and leashed dog in a thermal area when she broke through a thin crust over scalding water and suffered burns to her leg. The husband and dog were not injured.

- The woman and her husband went to a park medical clinic where they were evaluated. The patient was later transported via helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for further treatment.

- Visitors are reminded to stay on boardwalks and trails in hydrothermal areas and exercise extreme caution. The ground in these areas is fragile and thin, and there is scalding water just below the surface.

- Pets are prohibited on boardwalks, hiking trails, in the backcountry and in thermal areas in the park.

- This incident is under investigation, and the park has no additional information to share.

- This is the first known thermal injury in Yellowstone in 2024.

(Heads Up!) The parkwide fire danger level in Yellowstone is reduced to HIGH, and Stage 1 fire restrictions that went into effect July 27 have been lifted. At this time, there are no fire restrictions in place or planned in the park.

Currently, there are no active wildland fires in the park.

Campfires are only permitted within established fire rings in campgrounds and some backcountry campsites. Campfires must always be attended and cold to the touch before abandoning: Soak, stir, feel, repeat.

The Greater Yellowstone area is a fire-adapted ecosystem. Fire plays an important role in maintaining the health of this area's wildlife habitat and vegetation.

Recently, our apparatus have been having increased difficulty in responding to emergencies due to vehicle conflicts and vehicles failing to yield to emergency vehicles when the approach Airway Boulevard.

This week, the Fire District completed work on striping the front apparatus driveway of Station 1 to help deter vehicles from using this driveway for non-emergency purposes. The district is currently seeking support from Montana Department of Transportation to assist in addressing these conflicts to avoid a vehicle collision or any further delays in emergency response.

Please ensure to pull to the right for sirens and lights, and yield to emergency vehicles!
