Congratulations to Lindsey Catherine Houle of Stonington High School for receiving the ATHENA Scholarship. This program is sponsored thanks to the generosity of Metro Physical and Aquatic Therapy. Lindsey hopes to become a special education instructor one day. She’s been a member of the National Honor Society for 2 years. She served 4 years on the Student Government Committee and is presently the Vice President. She devoted 3 years to the Women’s Empowerment Club and is currently the Vice President. She was a program mentor, peer mediator and a member of Link Crew and the Civics Community Club.

Congratulations to Sara Arnold of Westerly High for receiving the Mary Lou Serra Memorial Scholarship! Sara is presently ranked first in her class with a GPA of 4.84. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the World Language Honore Society. She’s participated in girls travel soccer for 7 years, varsity softball for 4 years, girls volleyball for 4 years, south county volleyball 1 year, and VASA for 3 years. She was a member of the international Club for 4 years, character and education club for 2 years, math team for 2 years, and film club for 2 years. She has mentored elementary school students for 2 years and was a freshman tour guide for 2 years. Her essay entitled “the love of Westerly” perfectly encapsulated the Italian traditions and culture that were so prevalent in the life of Mary Lou Serra, a strong community advocate and substance abuse professional. Sara received her $1,000 scholarship on Wednesday night at the ATHENA AWARD celebration. Congratulations Sara!

Congratulations to Julia Grillo of Westerly High School for receiving the Ocean House Scholarship for Literary Arts. This award is funded by the Ocean House RI Fund for Charitable Giving and is given to someone that will include literary arts in their higher education. Julia’s senior research writing project focused on donating Christmas gifts and spreading awareness of children who have received a cancer diagnosis. Julia hopes to become a surgeon one day. She is Captain of her Tennis Club and has participated in varsity swim and varsity track and field. For three years she participated in the International Club and VASA, and for the last two she was a member of the Italian National Honors Society. She received her $1,000 scholarship earlier this week at the chamber’s ATHENA AWARD event.

Congratulations to Kaylee Tirrell of Stonington High School for receiving the Michael DePaola Scholarship for Poetry and Storytelling. This $1700 scholarship is generously provided by The United Theatre and is given in loving member of one of their original employees who was a deep thinker and a poet. Kaylee is passionate about the literary arts and impressed the committee with her many original works. She also is a member of the National Honor Society, a dancer for over 12 years and was in the Interact Club for 3 years, UNICEF Club 1 year and a Link Crew member this year.

Congratulations to Ava Lauria of Westerly High School and Alexander Hatch of Stonington High School! They each received a $1,000 Konicki Family Scholarship as part of the Chamber’s ATHENA AWARD program this week. Both are excellent students who volunteered in their community and have a very bright future ahead! Alex is a gifted musician who plays the saxophone and will attend Berkeley School of Music. Ava has a passion for baking and the traditions of her Italian heritage. She plans to pursue a Bachelors in Journalism. Funds for these scholarships were contributed by Carol Amodeo, Eric Pivco, Tom Fabian, Alexandra Konicki and Lisa Konicki.

Congratulations to Kate Rafferty of Westerly High School for receiving the Maddie Potts Memorial Leadership Scholarship sponsored by Yale New Haven Health Westerly Hospital. With an incredible 4.71 GPA Kate has well established herself as an outstanding student. She hopes to one day become an Elementary School Teacher. She has many years of Varsity soccer, basketball and track. She is a member of VASA and Character Ed and was in the Math Club 2 years. She was a freshman mentor and a youth basketball coach. She was an altar server for 6 years. Kate received her award at the Chambers ATHENA AWARD event this week.

Congratulations to Katelyn Cadmus of Stonington High School for receiving the Falguni B Hauser Memorial Scholarship! The Hauser family awards this scholarship in loving memory of Falguni Hauser, a devoted mother, wife and community volunteer. She was passionate about the arts, volunteered with the Westerly School system and supported Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. Katelyn has a 4.60 GPA and is Captain of her basketball team. She’s been a dancer for 15 years and plays the clarinet for the school Honors Band. Ahe is Secretary of the Tri M Music Honor Society. She has been involved in Girl Scouts for 13 years and has volunteered coaching basketball and cross country. She received her $1,000 scholarship earlier this week at the chamber’s ATHENA AWARD event.

October was Disability Employment Awareness Month, and the Stonington Schools Transition Program celebrated by creating a video aimed at showcasing our already inclusive community while also educating and inspiring others to embrace inclusivity!

This program expressed deep gratitude to the local businesses and community members who have provided invaluable vocational experiences for their students, featuring establishments like Surf Cantina, Fuel Good Nutrition, Jonnycake Center of Westerly, Stand Up For Animals, and the Mystic Seaport.

"Thank you, thank you for giving these students a chance and believing in them and us. We need more people like you in this world. These young adults are kind, compassionate, and hardworking. They are a joy to be around and we hope this video encourages others to reach out, become involved, and more inclusive! We all have a place in this world we just have to find it and we are eager to learn."

Surrounded by powerhouse leaders for 2 days, we are reminded that leadership is more than a skill—it's a journey we take together. Lisa Konicki and Maria DIMaggio were honored to convene with more than 70 accomplished Executives from chambers of commerce throughout New England.
This retreat wasn’t just about supporting the business community; it was about investing in each other's professional development. Here leaders share, learn, grow, and lift each other up because together, there’s nothing they can’t achieve. Known for being a catalyst for positive change, Lisa was a Facilitator and Panelist of a segment. She was also installed for a second term as a member of the Board of Directors for the New England Area Chamber of Commerce. This dynamic group embodies the values of regional collaboration, unwavering ethics, passion, creativity and measurable results while building thriving chambers and prosperous, resilient communities. Maria DiMaggio provided technical support throughout the program and chaired the auction which raised scholarship funds.
