5. Philadelphia/Brandywine Valley Accommodations: Best Western, King of Prussia 610-265-4500
● Wednesday, May 8 We’ll visit the handsome 18th-century Georgian Powel House, once home to the Mayor of Philadelphia, Samuel Powel. John Adams enjoyed “a most sinful feast” in the house and George and Martha Washington often visited and danced there. Next, we’ll tour the Barnes Foundation with its outstanding collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist works---including 181 Renoirs, 69 Cezannes, and 59 Matisses--amassed by Dr. Barnes from 1912-1951; our day will end with dinner aboard the Mosholu on the Delaware River.
● Thursday, May 9 After a visit to the National Constitution Center to see the film “Freedom Rising,” we’ll drive to Longwood Garden for a guided tour through colorful spring azaleas, peonies, tulips, and daffodils, all bursting into bloom. The elegant soaring conservatory is a treat in every season. In late afternoon, we’ll stop at the Brandywine River Museum renowned for its collection of works by W.C., and Andrew Wyeth. Dinner at historic General Warren Inne in Malvern, PA.
● Friday, May 10 During our guided tour of the exhibit “The Impressionist’s Eye” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, we’ll see a broad range of drawings, watercolors, sculptures, and pastels by Monet, Cassatt, Degas, and Van Gogh, who made indelible marks on canvas, paper, and bronze; lunch on your own in the cafeteria.
