Join us for the annual Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony held at the White Salmon Cemetery. Monday 5/27 at 1:00 pm
White Salmon American Legion Evan Childs Post 87 and Carson, WA Legion Post 137 will sponsor a Veteran's Memorial Ceremony at the White Salmon Cemetery. The patriotic event will honor the sacrifices and service of passed local veterans. Approx one dozen deceased veterans will be inducted into the "Walk of Honor", each having a personalized bronze plaque permanently installed on the Walk. This less than an hour event will include a flag ceremony with color guard salute, guest speaker and possible flyover of vintage military aircraft from the Hood River Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum. This is a wonderful annual tribute to our veterans.
Everyone is welcome.
Seating provided for first 200 guests. Plenty of parking.

Coming to work in the Spring can sure lift the spirits after the winter doldrums! The new spring green leaves glow in the sunlight.
Mt Adams Chamber & Visitor Center is a great place, I enjoy helping people traveling. Today I was able to warn some travelers off from trying to head north through the forest to get to Randle. There is still plenty of snow up high, and those roads are not plowed. People following GPS, and Google Maps, get told they can go that way, and then they get stuck in the snow and have to walk for miles to get help. Always check first... either call the Ranger stations, or check the Gifford Pinchot National Forest- U.S. Forest Service website for recreation conditions.
Today I was told by the Mt. Adams Ranger Station folks that you can ALMOST get to the 90 road on the 23, however from there to Randle climbs many feet in elevation over Babyshoe Ridge.

sigh, I will just enjoy these new leaves awhile longer.
cheers!
Darlisa

Info on how to check mountain recreation conditions in Gifford Pinchot National Forest- U.S. Forest Service

Many of us are getting anxious to "head for the hills" as spring commences. Here is a reminder that many Gifford Pinchot National Forest- U.S. Forest Service Forest Roads are not yet open due to snow. You can always learn more by going to the GPNF website, or calling the Mt. Adams Ranger Station in Trout Lake.
Phone: 509-395-3402
Every year there are folks who get deeply stuck in snow thinking they can get through to Randle or somewhere. Don't be that person!
website to check on recreation conditions: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recmain/giffordpinchot/recreation

Other tidbits from the website:
"Mt. Adams area is administered by the Mt Adams Ranger District. This area is located in the eastern portions of Gifford Pinchot National Forest in southwest Washington, and comprises 367,000 acres. This area includes Mt. Adams Wilderness, Indian Heaven Wilderness and Trapper Creek Wilderness.

"The Lewis River Recreation Area is within Mt. Adams Ranger District. The Lewis River Recreation Area is a 14-mile corridor, situated alongside the Lewis River and Forest Road 90 within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. This popular recreation area is located 26 miles east of Cougar, and 29 miles west of Trout Lake, WA. This area provides access to the popular Lewis River Trail #31, and associated waterfall viewing. Advanced reservations via Recreation.gov are required daily during the busy visitor season from June 15 through September 30.

Mt. Adams is a prominent landmark in the area. Elevations here range between 1200 feet at the Wind River Work Center, 12 miles north of Carson, WA., and 12,276 feet at the summit of Mt. Adams. Precipitation varies from 70.7 inches of rain and 65.1 inches of snow at the Wind River Work Center and 44.1 inches of rain and 95.7 inches of snow at the Mt. Adams Ranger District office in Trout Lake, WA. The area features a great diversity of habitats and features, from old growth to second growth forest, wetland areas, low and high elevation meadows, glaciers, and low and high elevation lakes.""

Take advantage of the dry days to get outside and explore some of our local trails. It does not take much sunshine to start luring the first wildflowers up. There are still plenty of migratory birds visiting us to watch for while you are out.

9/17 Gorge Geology Tour with Lloyd DeKay~ The stunning and tranquil beauty of the Columbia River Gorge region belies a tumultuous geologic history.
That history spans about 50 million years of massive volcanoes and fissure eruptions, huge forces bending and breaking the rock layers, catastrophic Ice Age Floods, landslides, and earthquakes.
In a 70 mile loop we’ll visit stunning geologic evidence of that tumultuous geologic history. We’ll see forests, lakes and swamps that were buried by massive lava flows, look at huge faults and folds that deformed the landscape. We'll imagine 1000 foot deep mud-choked floods remaking that landscape. We’ll even see the rusty remnants and stand in the vent area of a volcanic eruption. When we’re done you may never see the Gorge the same way again. Join tour leader Lloyd Dekay, president of the Columbia Gorge chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute on September 17, 2023 for this informative geology tour on both sides of the Columbia River. This driving tour includes numerous stops and short hikes to learn about the Gorge’s unique geology and ice age floods remnants.

Rep. Mosbrucker, state and local officials to hold community town hall meeting Tuesday in Goldendale on Newell Road Wildfire

Rep. Gina Mosbrucker is announcing a community town hall meeting Tuesday, July 25, at 6 p.m. at the Goldendale Middle School, 520 E. Collins Street in Goldendale, to update local Klickitat County residents on the Newell Road Fire. Mosbrucker will be joined by officials from Klickitat County Search and Rescue, Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Klickitat County Sheriff's Office, the Incident Command Management Team, the American Red Cross, and other fire officials.

The fire started around 3:35 p.m. on Friday on Newell Road near Bickleton and has now grown to more than 50,000 acres, covering at least 20 miles of land. State DNR crews and aerial mobilization efforts are on site, along with local fire resources, to fight the wildfire. Areas within the fire zone are under various evacuation levels.

"It's important we bring the community together to help everyone understand what is being done to protect lives and property and prevent further damage as this wildfire grows. We want to be available to answer questions and help inform residents of what they can expect and what they should be doing to protect themselves and their families," said Mosbrucker, R-Goldendale.

WHAT: Newell Road Fire Community Town Hall Meeting
WHO: State and local officials, Rep. Gina Mosbrucker

You can purchase a Gorge Pass good for a year, for $40. Normally it costs $10 each way for a trip to Portland on the Columbia Gorge Express. With the Gorge pass, you can go anywhere in the network of buses that take this pass, all year long. Cheaper than gas and bridge toll!

Portland is routinely ranked among the best transit cities in the US. Those of us out here in the Gorge may not realize how easy it is to grab reliable, clean, modern transit into the city, but we're doing our best to get the word out! 📢 Use the Columbia Gorge Express to run in and out of Portland (free with a GOrge Pass.) Transfer to the expansive MAX light rail and streetcar network and with a $5 day pass, you have nearly door to door service to many of the most celebrated points in the city.
