What is a Snow Ghost?

These Dr. Seuss looking figures are a natural phenomenon, special to Northwest Montana. Snow Ghosts are made up of ice, called rime, and has the perfect weather to create them.

Let's get into the science of it all. This ice rime is formed by water droplets from fog made up of masses of suspended liquid water droplets that exist at a liquid state between 30° and -40° ❄️ These droplets have no nuclei, so they can stay in this liquid form until they come in contact with another obstacle - like trees. As the snow builds up on the tree, out comes that fluffy looking shape of a snow ghost. But make no mistake, these ghosts are not as soft as they may appear.

Have you ever seen a snow ghost? Snap a picture the next time you visit and hit the mountain for some turns - they are a perfect model for a beautiful photo. 👻🗻

Has anyone ever seen a Sundog? They are rare and tough to capture on film, but this bright spot also known as a parhelion, was taken by local photographer while skiing . Sundogs are formed by the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals. Thank you Brian for sharing this amazing photo!

Huckleberries are out and ripe for the pickin'! 🫐 These sweet berries thrive in the Rocky Mountains in the underbrush of subalpine forests. Not only are they delicious on their own, but are perfect in pies, as syrups, or just thrown on a pile of pancakes for a Montana breakfast. 😋 Hit the trails to pick some hucks of your own.
