First time in with our new horse! His name is Burt and he's a 4 yr old Percheron! Going over the bridge safely is critical and we were pretty sure he'd never seen a bridge before!!! With seasoned Jim to steady him, Burt did great!!! It was a beautiful day to go into the Great Camp Santanoni!!

Just want to update everyone on the Santanoni Great Camp wagon rides. We are still waiting for the state to approve our vendor permit. They say they have all the necessary paperwork and it is high priority but yet we wait..... Our state contract to provide the free rides for disabled people has been terminated because the state bought a wagon without any input from horse knowledgeable people. This wagon is too heavy, too large for our 2 horses to pull and navigate the Adirondack terrain. We won't risk the safety of our horses or passengers to satisfy the DEC. For the last 8 years, there was no wagon for the purpose of transporting disabled people. They all rode our wagon. The state has determined that our wagon is not appropriate. What this means is the hundreds of people that couldn't walk the 10 mile round trip, that rode on our wagon for the last 10 years will no longer get a state funded ride, a ride that they are entitled to because of a settled law suit that provided access to the Great Camp for all that couldn't get in there by walking, biking, or horseback. The permit we are waiting on allows us to run a business on state property. We will keep you posted as soon as we get approval or you can call DEC directly for details on this problem. Thank you for any support you have given, we really appreciate it.

Rain brings a special beauty to the Santanoni Forest Preserve. A hush that is only broken by the sound of raindrops on leaves. It brings a lushness of green, softened hues of greens that only the filtered light can show. There is so much beauty in the variety of mosses and mushrooms in every inch of the forest floor, almost magical. The mist that floats on the mountain peaks and the lake waters, the babbling of the little streams that are only active from the rain brings a sense of peace. Going along the trail or the carriage road is like entering a mystical world, with low hanging branches of rain-covered leaves and ground that shows the first hint of season's change: the colored leaves of fall.🍁

Larry and I walked to the farm complex today to check the condition of the carriage road. Road to the farm looks good and Monday we will get a report on the rest of the road into the camp. Spring has definitely sprung in Newcomb!! We found frog eggs!!😀😃

While most modern means of travel can get a person from NYC to the Adirondacks fairly quickly, it used to not be the case. In 1880, a trip from the city to Blue Mountain Lake could take upwards of 26 hours, covering 270 miles and involving a variety of forms of transportation (like boats and stagecoaches). Paved roads have helped make the area accessible, but many locations still have dirt roads or require access by foot or in a boat, reminiscent of trips made by the earliest travelers to the region.
