In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, here are three Texas locations he visited.

In October 1959, Dr. King spoke to 400 people at Fort Worth’s Majestic Theater, which was later demolished; a marker now commemorates his visit.

In March 1962, he delivered his “Civil Liberties and Social Action” speech to nearly 1,200 people at the Texas Union building in Austin, advocating for nonviolent action.

On October 17, 1967, Dr. King spoke at Houston’s Sam Houston Coliseum, where his speech was briefly interrupted by Klansmen using stink bombs, but he continued undeterred. Martin Luther King Jr.’s visits were significant in his advocacy for equality and justice

Labor Day weekend should be a holiday for relaxation and fun with friends and family. However, Labor Day can unfortunately be a dangerous time to be on the road because of drunk drivers. TxDot’s “Drive Sober. No Regrets.” campaign aims to spread awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. If you decide to celebrate by drinking this Labor Day, be sure to make the right decision and plan ahead for a safe and sober way to travel, whether it be public transportation, rideshare, or having a designated driver.
