Sargassum Triggerfish (Xanthichthys ringens) Fun fact: Triggerfish get their name from the dorsal spine that can be raised and locked into position to deter larger fish from attacking. The spine can also help to lodge them into the reef while they are sleeping or hiding from predators.

Christmas tree worms are abundant throughout the Caribbean and come in a wide variety of colors. When threatened, a whorl-like crown of radioles allows them to retract very quickly in a spiral motion. Under the crown is a very sharp spike that will hurt any fish trying to take a bite, discouraging them from trying again.

This beautiful Golden Coral Shrimp (Stenopus scutellatus) is very similar to the Banded Coral Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus) but has a golden to yellow body and it is not as often encountered. We were lucky to spot this little guy on our beautiful Anse Chastanet house reef.
