Have you ever wondered what makes the powdery sand of Hawai‘i's beaches so stunningly white? Look no further than this set of chompers!

The colorful parrotfish grazes along coral reefs, using its beak-like dentition to nip off algae and other marine plants that would otherwise smother the coral. This material is ground up and cleaned as it moves through the fish’s digestive system and exits the fish as pure, white sand.

Just one adult parrotfish can produce 1,000 pounds of the stuff in a year! Waves carry this by-product onto the islands, to be enjoyed by all those lucky enough to live in or visit Hawai‘i.
