⚠️Extremely high fire danger possible today. ⚠️ Help protect life, property, and the overall environment by using great caution to prevent any fires. We want everyone to stay safe during this very dry and windy time.

Gusty winds of 30 to 40 mph again on Thursday in conjunction with relative humidity dropping into the 15 to 25 percent range will bring very high to extreme fire danger across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Fires will be easy to start, and fast to grow and spread under these conditions.

The black-and-white photo is from 1954. In it shows the 1933 International we still have at the station. For at least 70 years now, Wilber Fire & Rescue has participated in fire prevention activities with our area children. The kids loved all the trucks and especially the ride back to school.

Fire Prevention Week 2024 was another successful event. The theme this year is, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you." We were able to participate in the fire drill at Wilber Clatonia on Thursday and speak with the elementary class about fire safety and how important smoke alarms are in every home. On Friday the 4th graders visited the station and got a ride back to school on the fire truck. We always enjoy educating these young people and seeing their excitement around the members and trucks. We hope to see some of them as members in the future.

Saturday will be an extreme fire weather day and will be very difficult to control fires if they break out. Please consider taking a break from harvest if you can. Go watch the husker game or take your wife out on a date (I bet she would like that).

If you must partake in harvest, please at the very least have a tractor and disk or a water source ready at the field you are harvesting. And call 911 RIGHT AWAY if you see smoke.

Our department has been busy this summer. Here is a little recap of some things we’ve been up to. In June we had training with the lifeguards and gave tours for summer school classes. In July we held our Steak & Shrimp dinner with gun raffle. And here in August we spent an evening having some fun waterfighting in front of the station. We continue to respond to numerous rescue calls and several fires. Thank you all for your continuous support. If you are looking for a way to give back to our community please ask us questions and apply today!
