This time of year, in southeast Oklahoma many look forward to hearing the buzz of hummingbirds in their gardens and around their patios. Zipping back and forth from flower to flower preforming the ever-important job of pollinating the wild and not so wildflowers that bring color and beauty to our countryside, public spaces and home gardens; but did you know, the gentle hum you hear, which is so characteristic of the tiny nectar loving birds may in some cases not be a hummingbird at all?
The creature you see captured in the slow-motion video featured here is not a bird at all. It is instead a flying insect more closely related to a butterfly than to a hummingbird. The Hyles lineata, or more commonly known as the white-lined sphinx, is a moth of the family Sphingidae. Because of their size and flight patterns these fast-flying insects are sometimes referred to as hummingbird moths.
As caterpillars, they have a wide range of color phenotypes but show consistent adult coloration. With a wide geographic range throughout Central and North America, H. lineata is known to feed on many different host plants as caterpillars and pollinate a variety of flowers as adults.
Larvae are powerful eaters and are known to form massive groupings capable of damaging crops and gardens. As adults, they use both visual and olfactory perception to locate plants from which they collect nectar. The adults will feed on different flowers depending on its behavior and on whether they are diurnal or nocturnal. If the adults are nocturnal, they will choose flowers that are white or pale colored, which are easier to identify in contrast to the dark foliage surrounding the flower. If they're diurnal, they will choose flowers that are more brightly colored.
So the next time you are on your patio or in your garden and hear that familiar humming take a closer look, you may find that your not hearing a hummingbird at all but instead a white-lined sphinx.
