Today, we turn the page on the year 2024. And we thank everyone for making it a great year here at Visit Luzerne County. We had a fantastic Rockin’ The River music series in Wilkes-Barre, and the inaugural Rockin’ The Mountain Music Series in Hazleton was also a great success and attracted thousands of people. The inaugural Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Home Run Derby helped celebrate the Bambino’s epic homerun near Kirby Park, while also raising funds for a great cause, and we were proud to serve as major sponsors of the Keystone State Games, the Fine Arts Fiesta, the Briggs Farm Blues Festival, the Giants Despair Hillclimb, the City of Wilkes-Barre’s Old-Fashioned 4th of July celebration, the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Mohegan Arena, the Wilkes-Barre Cavalcade of Jazz, the Back Mountain Triathlon, the Luzerne County Arts & Entertainment Hall of Fame, the F.M. Kirby Center, the City of Wilkes-Barre’s free summer concert of Public Square, and the City’s Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day and Pridefest parades. We also served as proud sponsors of the Edwardsville Pierogi Festival, the Plymouth Kielbasa Festival, and the Pittston Tomato Festival.

We also kicked off the Visit Luzerne County Pizza Trail, we debuted “Next Stop: the Visit Luzerne County Podcast” and launched our new TikTok page. We partnered with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on fun promotions, and we are proud to support our region’s home teams. We love Luzerne County, we love all of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and we are proud to be a part of this community. We appreciate everyone that stopped in to see us this year at the historic train station, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve as your Visitors Bureau.

Thank you, again, for a great 2024! And Happy New Year!

Thank you, to Lark Mountain Marketplace, for donating this beautiful, framed drawing of the historic train station to the Visitors Bureau. The building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1868 and has been our home for nearly three years. We have displayed the artwork with pride, for all to see. Thank you!

The planning committee of the Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Home Run Derby recently made a $2,200 donation to the Geisinger Children’s Miracle Network/Janet Weis Children’s Hospital. The donation came from proceeds of the event, which was held on October 12 at Kirby Park, near the site where Babe Ruth, in 1926, hit a 650-ft. homerun. Shown, from left: Jim Martin, Luzerne County Sports Hall of Fame; Kyle Stratton, Visit Luzerne County; Romilda Crocamo, Luzerne County Manager; Sarah Harris, Visit Luzerne County; Samantha Kennelly Hinkle, Children’s Miracle Network at Geisinger/Geisinger Health Foundation; Brandon Owens, City of Wilkes-Barre; Mayor George Brown, City of Wilkes-Barre; Mike Slusser; City of Wilkes-Barre; Alan Stout, Visit Luzerne County. Absent from photo: Rich Kachmarsky, Kingston-Forty Fort Little League/Girls Softball; Russ Canzler, Russ Canzler Sports. (County Manager Crocamo, a Yankees fan, and Mayor Brown, a Phillies fan, had a friendly wager on the City vs. County Derby, each agreeing that if their team hit fewer homeruns, they would wear a team jersey of the other’s favorite team to work for the entire day.) The winner of the Men’s Derby was Kegan Laman of Dickson City. The winner of the Women’s Derby was Rose Morgans of Hanover Township. Plans are underway for the Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Home Run Derby to return in October of 2025. Details will be announced in April. 🥎

The Luzerne Merchants Association will hold it’s 3rd Annual Hometown Christmas Stocking Stuffer event on December 21, 2024 from 12 pm to 3 pm. The event will be held on Main Street in Luzerne.

Santa Claus has come to the town of Luzerne and has dropped off stocking stuffers at each of our local businesses! Children are invited to bring their stockings to the businesses in town and receive a “stocking stuffer” in each of our participating businesses. The list of participating businesses can be picked up at the first participating location: Sugarkraze Candy Shoppe and Bakery, 229 Chapel Street, Luzerne; at the start of the event.

Children can meet Santa at Keystone Behavioral Services, 205-207 Main Street, Luzerne. Free hot chocolate will be provided by The Cocktail Cruiser of NEPA.

Luzerne Merchants Association developed this event to encourage families to visit small businesses and to shop locally this holiday season.

This event will be held rain or shine. Entry to and participation in this event is free and open to the public.
